Holy hell, 5 laps of that Cobbled Climbs course in the ZRL tonight was BRUTAL

Team Splitters came 6th tonight and we finish the league in 4th - we were in with a shot at winning at one point this season but have been hit a bit hard with illness and technicals for the last couple of weeks - but still good fun as always (well, ask me about whether tonight's race was "fun" in a few days maybe!). Thanks to @bobinski for stepping in to the team tonight :okay:

How did it go for Team CCC - I see you slacked off with just 4 laps in Cat C so I guess it was a walk in the park? ;)

Race video here - still currently processing in HD but should be done soon I think. See if you cna spot when I got cramp :surrender:

Funny old race wasnt it; if you had gotten a better powerup first time up Libby there you would have had first in FTS and FAL. @IrishAl not far behind as well.

First split fell kindly for me as I had gone for that sprint and then all came together and as @Peter Salt said In our chat a totally different group broke through afterwards and he finished very strongly. My legs were jelly every lap after governors and but you kind of knew if you could hold on you'd be pootling about after that until Libby, but got harder each lap. Seemed to be more ebb and flow than there usually is.

great season all round, think next year with a bit of luck we will be up there

I'd kind of forgotten about my chase to get back on the front group after the hills on lap 2 - that was painful! I was hanging 3 seconds off the back of the group for ages and literally got within 1 second at one point but could quite make it on, leading to 10 minutes riding solo betwee the first and second groups......only for it to come back together anyway on lap 4....after which I promptly got dropped again on Libby Hill. Yeah, a funny old race!

I watched your video Paul. You were solo for so long:ohmy:

You unfortunately missed the break that Pete jumped onto. He blasted over the top off the 23rd st banner, whereas you eased a little. That's all it took to be spat out from the leading pack

Next year :okay:

BTW Happy Xmas and New Year. :hello:

I think you mean Libby Hill - but yeah, I was cramping up by that point unfortunately so while I wanted to keep blasting I simply couldn't. I was literally off my bike stretching my calves on the descent!

It was a hard watch as I was hanging out at the back and could see it coming down but I knew when we hit the downhill it would be too late! I did offer to try and tow but if I'm honest I probably wouldnt have been much use anyway

Salt and electrolytes if you are suffering whilst racing.

I have to confess, I experimented with salt and pure sugar in races. I take 50g of white sugar diluted with a pinch of salt. I start drinking 20mins before the race during warm up. I haven't suffered any downsides, no cramp or feeling sick. I started taking it after my tiny 4 races, where I began to feel sick from repeated max efforts.

Yeah thanks for that offer - I was too knackered and pissed off to even reply at that point so sorry for blanking you! And I didn't want you to anyway as there would have been a danger that we both got dropped (obviously didn't know at that point it would come back together)

I'm prone to cramp in longer races with extreme efforts like this - always have been. Electrolytes don't really help much (I had them before and during the race). It's just pushing harder and for a longer duration than I'm conditioned for, combined with my legs being prone to it.

Id suggest plenty riding in Z2, Bob n Tommy great proponents of this ^_^ :hello:

With the cramp thing I think it’s still a bit of a mystery isn’t it. It has various causes and it affects people differently. And then some things work for some but not others. Bloody stings a bit though doesn’t it! Both legs at the same time being my personal favourite.

Yeah there's lots of potential causes if you look into it - dehydration and lack of electrolytes being one of the obvious ones, but there are others too and some people are more prone to it than others (like most things really). Your muscles getting fatigued beyond what they're accustomed to is also a big factor even for well conditioned athletes - a good example of this is football and the number of highly fit players going down with cramp in extra time because it's beyond the amount of time they're conditioned to play at that intensity.

Last night I just about managed to avoid the full on agony stage thankfully! (You know - Tour of Cambridgeshire level agony :okay:)
