Loving that the espionage has started already.

Have the majority of people got discord? It'll be more important for TTTs and when we are in our groups.

Failing that make sure everyone is following everyone on their team so you can see where they are on the road, if you are both isolated and a minute apart on the volcano makes sense to team up etc. Also to give a few words of encouragement - it's a long one
It will be important we all try and get discord working, even for the races. I can see race 1 being blown apart on the climbs and there will be groups all over the road. So it will be good to know where everyone is, if someone is behind but in a chase group Then it is probably best the leaders push on, go for points and the best possible time.

I’m going to do a light spin at 5:30 this evening. If anyone wants to join or even just test discord then let me know

Quite likely I can join you at that time. Would be good to do a discord check as well.

What are peoples thoughts on bike/wheel choice for tomorrow?

The hills aren't particularly long, and there's a lot of downhill/flat/rolling so I don't think you want to compromise aero for lightweight TOO much. On the other hand, you should be dragged along in the draft a lot on the flats anyway as the field will be quite big, and although they aren't long, the climbs are going to be the decisive parts of the ride where we could do with all the help we can get!

I'm erring towards a compromise option of the Canyon Aeroad with Zipp 858s (not with the super9 rear disc wheel)...

I was surprised by this as I was going to go with something similar but Tron seems to be the choice. Even on the volcano climb it performs as well and overall it outperforms. Still a good choice though

That's interesting - what data are you looking at to say the Tron performs as well as the Aeroad + 858s on the climb? Because Zwiftinsider speed tests show the Aeroad + 858s as a faster climber than the Tron

Sorry completely forgot to link to the article, there's a section on the choices below. Their point was that the climbs weren't long enough for lightweight to win out over aero. I'd have thought the volcano might have been but there you go. May misinterpreting it as only had a quick glance

Thanks michael that's a really good article I hadn't seen before!

Interesting that on those climbs there's no difference between any option, whilst on the climbing tests he's done up the Alpe, there's a significant difference between some of those setups - https://zwiftinsider.com/aeroad-2021-charts/

I guess the climbs are perhaps less steep and therefore fast enough that the aero advantage is still enough to cancel out any weight disadvantage?

OK, with this new information to hand I will have a re-think! 🤔

I had the same thought process. I bought the aeroad and everything!

My thinking is different but I maybe flawed in my thinking. If I’m going to get dropped it’s normally going to happen on the hill not the flat. So I’d rather give myself every chance to hang on up the hill. So for me that’s the aeroad.

Yeah but if you read the article Michael's linked to they've done speed tests up the actual hills on this course and the Aeroad with any wheelset is no quicker than the Tron up them - but all are slower elsewhere on the course

Like bridgy said there is no advantage over the Tron. It’s one of the reason why you see a lot of tt teams use it on nearly every course.
