Just found out from Gplama how the Sterzo Smart work. Very clever and super simple.

Magnets

It seems the pivot bolt is magnetic and the PCB has a hall effect sensor to measure the field position. So no wear and tear on the steering angle side, just potentially wear on the pivot point like the headset races on a bike.
