Regarding the weight doping. I don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said really...

Maybe it comes down to that debate about how much people care? For example I care enough to try to push myself to my limit when I race. But I don’t care enough to bore my family with the details when we’re sat around the dining room table. The result of a race just doesn’t effect me that much either way to try and mess with it.

Sorry to say this but I kind of miss bkool. The power reading was so random I don’t think it would occur to anyone to meddle with their weight 😁. Just seemed way less serious over there.
Ah, Rose tinted spectacles mate! We found plenty to moan about back in those days - remember the controversies about the old on-off technique for example? And tyres and tyre pressures etc etc?

We're just going through one of those periods of winding each other up about stuff - we'll get over it soon (and find something else to get stressed about!)

It's all good fun and healthy competition - but it'll never be perfect, and we'll always find something to moan about. Wouldn't want it any other way :okay:

If anyone has a family that are interested in their online exploits then fair do’s. But it’s fair to say my other half doesn’t fall into that camp! It does have its upsides though. For starters she wouldn’t know one of my bikes from another

Which leads us neatly on to my own weight loss project 😄

Zipp 404 tubular wheelset with Vitoria corsa G+ tyres (+tub tape).

2114kg. Lovely wheel set. Nice wide rims that fit a 25mm tub perfectly and very comfy as well as stiff. As well as making a loverly whoosh noise! Seems heavy! I don’t heave a weight without the tubs on unfortunately. You may have noticed the wheel has a cassette attached that I didn’t really want to remove. But I did have another ultegra 11-28 cassette to hand that I weighed and then subtracted to give the above total.

Lightweight meilenstein 24E Schwartz edition with veloflex tubs (+tub tape)

(The Schwartz bit refers to the fact it has ceramic bearings. The 24 refers to the rim width. 1730g. (From memory the wheels without tubs were well under 1100g but I can’t find the record from when I originally weighed them. They’re just one of those things to put a goofy grin on your face. They split opinion I guess. But I love them.

Tune ti skewers 42g

There is a compromise with ti skewers. Some of them don’t tighten very well and sometimes they squeak a little too. But these ones have been ok generally so far. I said generally lee before you say anything!

So.... tonight’s grams weight loss total is.... 429g!

Still awake? 😄 Hopefully more next weekend.

Love those Meilenstein wheels - are they the same ones you had at the Double Devil? They looked gorgeous on your bike.

Ultegra cassette? Upgrading to Dura Ace for a bit more weight loss surely? Or is that waiting for the next instalment.

P.S. Nearly half a kilo saved there - very good! I take it you're not doing a £££ per kilo calculation?! I don't really want to know that to be honest, it will spoil the fun ^_^

Yes one pair is definitely enough! :B)

Actually these are the wheels I crashed on in the alps last summer. The rear one got trashed so technically new (luckily I was insured).

Good point I meant to do the cassettes but forgot... I bought myself sram red 11-32 cassette a couple of summers back. They’re pricey but I only use it on the bike trips so it’ll last as long as I’m using 11 speed gears hopefully.

Ultegra 11-28 speed cassette 246g

apparently all the pro teams use these instead of the dura ace one because they’re a lot cheaper and also mechanically much more sound. The dura ace cassette has a lightweight carbon(?) parts which begin to make a rattle noice over time. I guess also they have to stick to 6.8kg uci limit don’t don’t mind the extra weight.

Sram red 11-32 cassette 194g

That’s quite a weight difference! Especially when you think about the larger 32 sprocket. It’s made using one piece rather than multiple sprockets which keeps the weight down.

Total weight loss... 52grams!

No I won’t be doing a £ per g saved equation! Like you say it kind of takes the fun out of it for me too. The money side of it isn’t very interesting really. You can try and work it out but I got some good contacts and some very good deals along the way so it’s not near rrp on most things.

Wow that Sram red cassette is really light - lighter than the published weight of the Dura Ace 11-30. It's almost like you know what you're doing!

It is very comforting knowing I'm going to have a very solid excuse for you going up Mont Ventoux way quicker than me

(Not that its a race etc etc)

You know whenever bob or lee has raised the weight of my bike in the past it’s been very easy to bat it off considering their rider plus bike weight is still much lower than me. But in your case... maybe I should of thought this through before being so open about it...

We are basically the same weight and also have a very similar average power on virtually every race. It could genuinely actually make a difference... IF it wasn’t for the fact you yourself ride the same bike ridden by Quintana in multiple tour de france. And he seems to do just fine on it 👍

Good thing it’s definitely not a race 😁

Yes good point - I will be channelling my inner Nairo and floating up that mountain like a 59kg superhuman Colombian 💪

Just tried it (on android) and it seems to be working fine for me

Probably iOS issue. I try both wifi and mobile broadband, no difference.

edit. that issue seems be only in a next TdZ event, other events work perfectly.

Funny you say that. It reminds of watching @berty bassett disappear up a hill.

It was in the Pyreneese a couple of years ago. I think he felt he owed me one from the day before for some reason ( can’t think why 😄).

Pretty much as soon as we hit the climb Lee hits the gas. Up out of the saddle and dancing on the pedals! He gapped me straight away, but he didn’t disappear. He just slowly cruised up and away from me. We were going up through woods on a zig zag road. So every time I turned the corner I could see him up ahead. But every corner I went around he was slightly further up the road than he had been on the last corner. Until eventually I turned a hairpin and he wasn’t there. Too far up the road and gone. Funny thing is it just made me smile. Watching him dance away. It really was like watching a mountain goat in his element like Contador, or Quintana, just doing his thing. Just dancing on the peddles. Class act 👍

I watched your ride today and thought it was very similar to mine yesterday on the flats.

I can see where I lost time yesterday on the climbs. I said my power was well down on the climbs and that's where the difference between us was.

I lost 1.26 to you on the combined 3 climbs Strava segments and came in 1.25 behind you. Pretty much the reverse of our rides in Innsbruck.

I think I was spinning too much in a lower gear trying to conserve energy on the climbs but that backfired!

Great ride by you, especially considering you had no fan! :notworthy:
I went back to the tried and tested, go out controlled, work through the early stragglers, find a group pulling hard then hang on. I was on a wheel at one point, and he/she dropped power and lost the wheel of quite a large group. I geared up to chase, but then decided to be sensible and not get myself in trouble overheating. Thankfully there were enough other riders to work with and I still got a decent time.

Good news is I have just picked up a new fan :wahhey: Will likely do a zone 2 ride later (sorry Tommy), rest day tomorrow (first day in new job  ) then get ready for the final stage. If memory serves well, the Yorkshire course will be similar to Richmond;rolling roads with a few lumps that can be tempo'd over :okay:
