I'm not going to make the ride today. Ugh. Enjoy the race guys...
In the mean time, a couple thoughts on what I've noticed lately in races...
After the box hill climb there's a relatively short flat/downhill section, then a short climb before starting the real downhill. I've found that I'm often able to close some major gaps on that short little climb. That in turn often allows me to group-up and get a good rest on the downhill while maintaining or even improving my position as the group reels in singletons. What I'm wondering is why aren't folks hitting that hill harder. I'd be hard pressed to believe I carry that much more momentum or have that much stronger of an uphill sprint. Everyone's got to know there's a downhill on the other side and they can rest.
Related, I see folks really resting on the flat area before heading up out of the subway, but then they don't hit the subway climb hard. I seem to be able get nice gaps by pacing with the group, hitting the climb out of the subway very hard, maintaining hard for a bit after the climb, then settling into a near FTP pace for the last mile. What seems to be key here is keeping the hard effort for a bit after exiting the subway and settling into a near FTP effort for that last mile. I've seen the gap at ~5 seconds as I finish the climb and ~20 by the time I get back in the saddle for the final effort. Closing a 20 second gap on the last mile (which is flat) is going to be hard.
Not much to report on last night's race other than racing at night US time seems to have far fewer competitors. I was the only ZP D racer. FInished a couple minutes faster than last month's effort on the same course, better power, and with notably lower avg heart rate. I'll likely be racing again last tonight US time. Then I'm off for a few days...
