Opportunity for a whole day out, so took it!
The plan to traverse the Peak am then return up the Staffordshire moorlands pm looked to have been scuppered 20 miles in when PING! a front spoke broke out of the blue. Just about managed to remove it, but the somewhat crappy spoke key on my multitool wasn't up to adjusting tensions and rounded off the nipples instead of turning them. Brake was still useable, so decided to risk another 80 miles on it...
Some highlights of the morning ride:
Bells ringing out at the Cathedral of the Peak in Tideswell, the famous climb to Monsal Head, beautiful valley at Conksbury and lovely villages and farmhouses south of Ashbourne, an area I'm not familiar with.
The Yeaveley Arms at... you guessed it ...Yeaveley appeared just at the right time for lunch. A fine establishment serving a truly monumental portion of excellent pork belly with many trimmings which I would heartily recommend. Proceedings were enlivened by one of the regulars sharing his tales (and pictures) of an end-to-end ride on a sextuplet (six seated tandem!!!) and the sounds of a Sousaphone warming up(!)
Yeaveley Church and the band at the Yeaveley Arms:
I always think the Staffordshire moorlands are a bit quirky, perhaps on the Royston Vasey spectrum. They did their best, including Rock Cottage
and the village of Shaffalong:
Other afternoon highlights included the Churnet Valley, the unexpected, brutal but very enjoyable Carr Bank climb from Oakamoor and the wonderful views from Bosley cloud.
108 miles, 3200m climbing.
