Opportunity for a whole day out, so took it!

The plan to traverse the Peak am then return up the Staffordshire moorlands pm looked to have been scuppered 20 miles in when PING! a front spoke broke out of the blue. Just about managed to remove it, but the somewhat crappy spoke key on my multitool wasn't up to adjusting tensions and rounded off the nipples instead of turning them. Brake was still useable, so decided to risk another 80 miles on it...

Some highlights of the morning ride:

Bells ringing out at the Cathedral of the Peak in Tideswell, the famous climb to Monsal Head, beautiful valley at Conksbury and lovely villages and farmhouses south of Ashbourne, an area I'm not familiar with.

The Yeaveley Arms at... you guessed it ...Yeaveley appeared just at the right time for lunch. A fine establishment serving a truly monumental portion of excellent pork belly with many trimmings which I would heartily recommend. Proceedings were enlivened by one of the regulars sharing his tales (and pictures) of an end-to-end ride on a sextuplet (six seated tandem!!!) and the sounds of a Sousaphone warming up(!)

Yeaveley Church and the band at the Yeaveley Arms:

I always think the Staffordshire moorlands are a bit quirky, perhaps on the Royston Vasey spectrum. They did their best, including Rock Cottage

and the village of Shaffalong:

Other afternoon highlights included the Churnet Valley, the unexpected, brutal but very enjoyable Carr Bank climb from Oakamoor and the wonderful views from Bosley cloud.

108 miles, 3200m climbing.

I was back in Cambridge for a long weekend, staying with my son. The reason I was there is that we went to see Half Man Half Biscuit at the Junction last night. Utterly splendid!

I drove home this morning and then jumped my bike.

It was nice and warm, orchids and buzzards were the order of the day.

Like @cyberknight, I was fooled by the forecast, it was supposed to be dry today ffs, but as I got out of the front door there was some spitting spots on the drive, luckily it never amounted to more than a light drizzle, but it was the third wet ride out of the last four.

I hadn't planned any particular route, so just headed the opposite direction of last week. First Droitwich, then up Crutch Ln on to Wychbold and then some new lanes around Hanbury before heading back via Shellford, Egdon and Wadborough.

Just short of 47 miles, and managing a reasonable for me 15.5mph, looks like the legs are finally getting back their oomph, such as it was.

No photos today, as everything just looked grey and miserable.

Yesterday's ride ,considering I'm only 20 miles away from @cyberknight home I had no rain and stayed dry all day . Yesterday was my 56th birthday 🎂 so the plan was to ride 56 miles . Out the door at 0945 into overcast conditions I set off on a 50 mile route which I could add bits onto to make the distance . Anstey ,Cossington ,Thrussington where I had to take to the raised path as there was 4 inch of flood water on the road . Helped a driver turn round his car and caravan by stopping the traffic as he quite skillfully turned round in a gateway 👍. Stood talking to a local for a few minutes discussing wether my next river crossing would be ok and hoping a motorist would risk the flood but everyone was sensible . Across the A607 to Gaddesby and the rolling terrain up the first big climb out of Ashby Foeville ,rolling roads back to the A607 and crossed the river at Asfordby with no issues straight on to the next big climb of Saxelby hill . Up and over that quick couple of miles on the A606 then back to the lanes to Willoughby where I deviated from my normal route to Wysall and back to Wymeswold to add the extra distance required . Home via then end part of a standard 50km loop . Barrow ,Quorn ,Swithland and home , 56.33 miles in the bag at 15.8mph with 1985ft of uppnes still a bit chilly but at least I stayed dry

My ride on Sunday and I’d arranged to meet my mate Paul for it, he wanted about 20 miles as part of his London Brighton training. We’d arranged to meet at 1:30pm, but the unforecast rain also hit us, so we delayed it until 2:00pm when it had stopped. Milder than yesterday though, but very grey skies.

We set off to Betton Abbots, Condover and Dorrington, on fairly quiet lanes and enjoying the chatting pace. We had a short section on the A49, which necessitated avoiding an ambulance on blues and twos, then turned through Stapleton and began the long steady climb up to Pulverbatch. The initial section of the lane out of Stapleton is in a shocking condition with multiple potholes. The climb was into the breeze and actually steeper than I remember it in places, having not ridden it in that direction for 3 years.

After Pulverbatch we joined the main road back to Shrewsbury, which is mainly downhill, through Longden, Annscroft and Hook a Gate, getting up some good speeds, minding the odd crater in the road though.

We parted ways at Meole and I dropped through the village and home.

A very enjoyable ride with company and 20.74 miles at 12.8mph avg

Today's ride was a cold blustery affair around the Essex, Suffolk borderlands west and south of Long Melford. Strava'd a route to pick off as many villages as reasonably possible in this location.
Started out with reasonable sunshine but it soon clouded up with a very unpleasant gusty wind from an ENE quarter, never particularly warm. Very poor on cake stops in comparison with my area, NW Hunts but we did find "Twen tea one" in Sudbury for our healthy sausage roll, rocky road and hot chocolate. At this point we decided that 52 miles was a fair ride in inclement weather and there's always another day preferably when it's sun lotion weather to resume the rural exploration.
