Did my first proper ride out yesterday since getting over a bad flu bug/chest infection. I did try on Sunday but only managed 4 miles and promptly got off my bike and vomited behind a pile of pallets!! xx(

Anyway now fully recovered and with lovely weather I decided to go for a little spin to Pegwell Bay Country Park and back (about 7 miles).

I really enjoyed it but found it hard work, the little bit of fitness I did have has vanished since being off the bike for nearly 3 months.

I got to the country park and had a break and a bit of a sunbathe and enjoyed the peace and quiet. I'm now looking forward to getting out on the bike more and getting my fitness back.

In 6 months you won't remember what it was like to not ride the bike but you will remember how great it felt to be back out on it.

I needed to get out and test the latest changes to the knockabout bike so asked if my brother would be interested in a bit of a ride. He was, so we headed out on the short version of my Acton Burnell route.

Doug's previous best on this route was about 12 mph and with him training for the British Heart Foundation ride in June I persuaded him to press on a bit to try and beat this. It is :sun:and warm out there at the moment - so much so that this was the first ride of the year in shorts for both of us.:wahhey:There was a bit of wind but not too bad - it slowed us a bit on the Acton Burnell to Longnor section but helped from there onwards.

Doug made a really good effort on the way round and on a couple of the sections I was actually having to push hard to catch up with him. A big improvement on previous rides.

First impressions of the new drivetrain on the knockabout bike are good. Lowering the gearing in mid range has given it a nicer feel and it feels easier to keep up a reasonable cruising speed on the flat, even against the wind. The change has also sorted out a couple of niggles I'd had with it not shifting smoothly since fitting the last cassette (I think it's the slightly different chainline that's done it), so I'm a happy bunny. Finally, I'd not really noticed how rattley the old mudguards had got until riding with the non-rattley new ones.

Just under 17miles today with a new PB for Doug of 13.7mph average. Didn't he do well.

A quick stop just after Acton Burnell. Despite the sunshine and a bit of wind, there is still plenty of mist around. The Wrekin is lurking at the back of the shot.

Just over halfway round and Doug is looking pooped. Just a couple more miles and the wind will help push us along.

Get your ass to East Yorks, it's a great place for cycling.

If you like hills, then we've got 'em. They're not massive, but they drag on forever.

Take your pick:

Nunburnholme, Trundlegate, Acklam Wold, Hanging Grimston, Life Hill, Towthorpe, Weedley, High Gardham, Goodmanham, Kiplingcoates race course...

I recommend you drive over, get a B&B somewhere like Pocklington/Beverley, and then head to the hills for day rides. If you time it right, you could almost ride all day and not see a car.

A bit of local 'knowledge' added....

Ignore. misread the post!

27 mile pootle today and my legs felt like lead after yesterday. Lovely weather again once the fog had lifted.

Yesterdays was a steady but very blustery (didn't know which direction the wind was going to hit us at any given second) 17.5 miles with a friend from Sheffield over the strines via Bradwell and then back to Bradwell for a Lemon tart  1500ft of climbing in just over an hour and a half - no pictures as it was too windy to stand up and the fog didn't make for good vistas. When we organised the ride in the morning it was still, calm and sunny. Typical.

Today was a blustery drizzly 21 mile around the usual back roads with some hillier sections flung in..
No photos of the jaunt due to weather..
Bit of slog heading back into a strong headwind in the exposed sections, the last two mile in heavy rain.
Which begs the question, why did I go out in the first place;)

Met one other keen cyclist, where were you all?
