Just a jaunt around my regular route to Acton Burnell today, though I did go over Lyth Hill both ways rather than heading the direct way to Condover for a change.

Heading into Condover the road was a sea of mud which was exceptionally slippy and very unsafe to cycle on. I was pleased to see a road sweeper cleaning up on the way back, until I realised the machine was just spreading the mud across the road.

After Condover I overtook a lad on a mountain bike who was struggling up the slight hill towards Cantlop. I refrained from telling him that his saddle was about 3 inches too low. Not sure if I should have said something really - he may not have taken it in the spirit it was meant.

The ride through Pitchford, Acton Burnell and out to Longnor was uneventful but at Longnor I found the lanes teeming with 4x4s, quads and people in tweed suits. Obviously a hunt on but having done a loop round the area they were looking towards and neither seen nor heard anything of it, I suspect the hunt had probably gone a different way.

Approaching Condover again I passed the scene of an incident. Someone is going to get a shock when they next renew their insurance.

As already mentioned, the muddy area on Station Road. Condover was being swept but it didn't help as I was struggling for traction up the hill and was glad to get to the main road then the second climb over Lyth Hill. There was a crowd gathered in the car park on the hill and it looked rather like one or more of the cars had been broken into. Worth noting: Don't assume that because your car is parked somewhere quiet and rural that it is safe to leave anything of value in it as you go walking.

19.1 miles covered at 12.5 mph average.

EDIT: forgot to mention that this ride takes me over 2500 miles for the year to date. No chance of hitting my target for the year but at least I've got that under my belt.

1st crossing of Lyth Hill. The sky looks pretty moody over Church Stretton.

Pitchford Hall. It's apparently not uncommon for the owner to find his guests have already been shown to the drawing room by the butler. One small snag - the hall hasn't had a butler for many years.

Acton Burnell. Looks almost like spring rather than winter in this shot.

Just back from a leisurely 30 mile pootle round the muddy lanes of the Vale of Taunton Deane, followed by a bucket of coffee and an extremely delicious bowl of spicy parsnip soup at Hestercombe House. :hungry:

This is actually my longest ride for about a month and the first one on the road bike in that same time. Good to be back in the saddle though.

Early morning ride, meeting pals in Westbury-on-Trym before heading over the Avonmouth bridge, then thru' some very muddy lanes to Clevedon, and then the climb of Tickenham Hill ( a tough climb with a really steep bit in the middle  ) then a sprint along Beggar Bush Lane & onto the highlight of the ride, breakfast at the Ashton Court cafe. Dropped down to the Harbourside via the 1:6 Constitution Hill & then home via the Bristol/Bath railway path.
64 kms in total & home by 10:30 ^_^

15 miles on the Ridgeway from Ashbury Hill to somewhere 7.5 miles West of there and back with a mate. Nice little ride with some not so fun up hills but they meant for some fun down hills (25 mph on dirt is good:smile: ), but lots of scope for future exploring. Even managed to fix the gate that came off its hinges when I opened it.

Mrs 26 came on this one !!!!!! Couple of pals too. Mrs 26 fancied the loop I did the other day - except she had a different idea of the loop. It all got adapted anyway as we met one pal in Upton. Instead of the Hunt there was a shoot on not far from where I ran into the Hunt. Beaters and Guns! Make yourselves scare you Pheasant and Duck. Seems country "sports" are still alive and kicking - killing stuff. This time instead of rattling around the loop we stopped at The Mythe for Coffee and Cake before showing Sara the Big White Rabbit. Mrs 26 didn't turn into a pumpkin even after the 40 smiles. She had held it together rather well. I've just bought her a new bike (delivered next week I hope) so I'm expecting to get lots of lovely outings with her now

back from a mad dash backwards around Delamere Forest in a nice patch of sunshine. Seemed much harder than usual for some reason - all uphill...
anyhow there also seems to be more mud, slippy mud and puddles around - where did they come from? Not sure what it was about doing the 'usual' route in reserve but we were quicker than last week despite my asthma playing up for most of the ride and me having to do the off-road find your inhaler from zippered pocket, remove cap and take whilst not stopping (If I stop cycling whilst my asthma is playing up, I will have an attack, if I can carry on cycling and take my inhaler I don't so balance is key...)

Anyhow - nothing much to report except we were out 1/2hr earlier and everyone we met (up until the café area) said hello... from the café onwards it was mayhem and back to the usual grumpy people complaining about the cyclists... oh and what is it with the mtb'ers in Delamere forest always trying to pass me on the wrong side - I thought we were in the UK.... so for those I upset :hyper:, nope, I won't apologise, I shall just continue to pretend you don't exist and stick to the left of the track....

Anyhow - some pictures - my OH wondering where I have got to and cycling back towards me, and then our landlady's dog rather happy to see us back (and now on our (well the landlady's) sofa.)...

Yesterday I fitted a 16 tooth sprocket in place of the 18 I've been using for ages. I wondered how I would cope with a harder gear to push so I made for the east and the flat-ish roads. I found it OK but on the way back, if fact the very instant I turned, the wind picked up and I was battling into a block headwind all the way home. I kid you not it must have been 100mph with gusts of 150mph or more, no exaggeration, honest.
Anyway, I was cream crackered by the time I did get home. 37miles at 16mph with 1300ft of character building bits.

Now I have to go out walking with family and dogs. There is no rest for the wicked.

Nice relaxed 70KM with the club this morning, great weather for it, a few punctures but none of the drama that followed us last week, stopped for a cheeky bacon sandwich, good times.

62 fixed miles this morning stopping at the Barby Plant Nursery, an interesting morning riding roads I hadn't ridden for a couple of years, made the navigation interesting, struggling to remember the turns at times, grey and overcast most of the time but the sun shone through at times, turned in Swinford to go past Stanford Hall to Yelvertoft and found myself with a head wind all the way though to the Cafe, probably accouts for a sightly disappointing 2 ¼ hours for the 32 miles to the Cafe. Home across Granborough Fields, hard work into the wind, I saw a large bird of prey sat on a fence post as I headed for Broadwell, spent most of the ride back into a head wind, but when I turned and got it behind me I was flying, another good morning out on the bike, I did better on the way home, 2 hours for the 30 miles home is more like my normal pace, sore legs now but happy.

Anyone else really struggling with traction on the hill climbs on 23c roadie tyres on damp country roads now. As soon as I lifted out of the seat on some of the steeper slopes, the back end started to spin

I'm running 700cx25's and there was one climb this morning where the local farmer had left the road half an inch thick in mud, I had a little bit of wheel spin on it, but nothing to worry about, apart from that no problems at all, though there are some slippery roads about, there are threads on both CC and yacf about it, and the Coventry Road Club slow ride had a faller this morning, no harm done, due to a slippery lane going across GranBorough fields.
