63 miles and 1300 meters of climbing for me today with 400bhp FrankW and Lymm looper. The aim of the ride was to do 100K 1000m of climbing and take in Mow Cop, Gun Hill and Winkle for a league I ride in. The winner posting the quickest combined times up the three climbs.
Set off early a little bit aprehensive about the temperature and sun later on in the ride but we missed anything too hot or sunny.
The Killer Mile at Mow Cop is the type of climb I really don't like:angry: the final ramp up where it hits somwhere between 1 in3 and 1 in4 is one of those bits of roads that I don't have difficulty riding but find myself thinking what am I doing this for? Cracking cafe stop at Merebrook:hungry: overlooking the reservoir and then onto Gun Hill which I quite like. There was some Wiggle sportive going on with a lot of riders going in the other direction. It was all going fine until I tried to change front rings and the chain dropped off and the rear mech jammed, freed that up got back on and powered up the rest of the climb. Then onto Winkle just to finish off the challenge. Think I did alright but will find out next week. Good ride, good company and a super day for cycling in the hills.^_^

Beautiful as my ride today was http://connect.garmin.com/activity/345244804 I'd have swapped it for Rickshaw Phil's I hate him, did I say?

Just a trip across town today to service @gavgav's bike. Out of curiousity I weighed my panniers once loaded up with the tools I thought I might need; 10kg, which the bike handled really well.

Servicing done (without needing most of the tools I took ) I headed homewards, but decided at the last minute to follow the riverside path round rather than heading out to Atcham as I originally intended. This turned out to be a fortunate decision as my left pedal snapped off when I stood for a short climb in Castlefields. Slightly ironic really that I had pretty much all my toolkit with me and here was something that it wouldn't help me fix as I didn't have the part available.

So the ride turned into a walk as far as Dave Mellor's, who were really good and found me a decent replacement set for a limited budget (I only put in a few quid for emergencies, and no cards.) They offered to fit too, but not really necessary funnily enough.

12.34 miles (I thought that was a nice figure) at 10.9mph including the walk, so not too bad.

Thanks for the service and how much of the law of sod is that with your pedals!!!! Just after you serviced my pedals !!

25TT today on J2/9, smashed it! 57:38 (26 mph average). Everything went to plan, learnt from my wobbling about trying to drink last week so I planned to drink on any slower uphill sections where aero was less important and also when approaching 2 of the corners and having to knock my speed down anyway. Came off without a hitch and I felt strong throughout. I think I may have hydrated a bit too well because in the rather painful concluding miles I managed to puke from the bike, without breaking aero position mind so it didn't slow me down! Go hard or go home!

Just a short MTB trip was planned for today, as I'm trying not to stay out in the sun for more than 3 hours at a time. There's a nice little circuit in the North Pennines that fits the bill perfectly with the added bonus that I could do of a few bits for work on the way round that'd save me time (and a long walk) at a later date. A colleague asked if he could tag along, and so we arranged to meet at the village of Castle Carrock.

So the route was - from Castle Carrock follow the fellside road to Newbiggin, and then take the bridleway that loops round the back of Cumrew Fell....

....which eventually turns to drop down Geltsdale back to Castle Carrock.. .a round of around 14 miles.

When we got back the annual village music festival had started so we just had to have a well earned pint of cold shandy (we were both driving) and a burger off the BBQ. A nice relaxing ride of 14miles with 1600ft ascent. Mr GPS tells me we averaged jut under 7mph. When you have landscape like this to yourself, what's the rush?

Only a short 34km riding this morning, had to abort due to a screeching sound from my freehub when free wheeling or back pedalling at speed:sad:.
Internet research suggests lubricating the springs and pawls, so a quick fix hopefully^_^ .

Cheat time here.. This is actually yesterdays ride, not today's, as I didn't get the chance to post much yesterday...

Four of us drove to Great Easton, near Rockingham, to ride a route I sorted last year. This is my 4th time on it with conditions varying from 29c yesterday, to last December (I think) when I took the iced puddle pic I use as my avatar..

The start point was Great Easton, with lanes around Eyebrook Reservoir & up the hill into Dry Stoke. Sharp left at the top onto bridleways with lovely views across the climb and hills on the horizon yet to be ridden. I noticed a dodgy slewing from the back wheel and had to extract a thorn from the tyre & pump it up, luckily the Slime did it's job and I had no further issues with it.

The run back down to the Reservoir is Kings Hill Cat 4 climb for those aiming up, with a dodgy hairpin bend for us aiming downwards at speed . Just under 40mph for most of the hill

Back on bridleways after this and a Cat 4 Grassy Knoll to conquer. It was easier this time on dry grass than the mud I've done before, but I certainly got a sweat on by the top!

A mile on a back lane, though uphill, was a bit of a relax for a short while until a cross country bridleway into Blaston and an unmade field road to Medbourne where the Village Shop sells tea & wonderful home made cake... Nom nom nom
The Green outside has picnic tables in the shade for a chat and a rest..

Tea and Cake stop.jpg

Luckily, cake imparts energy, as the left turn you can see in the background of the pic is the start of Nevill Holt Hill, a Cat 4 climb!

I had to get a move on at this point as I had promised to pick my Granddaughter up from school at 3:30, so the last 4 or 5 miles were knocked out quite quickly. I don't like rushing a ride, and post-ride chat, as it's the company of good mates that makes the day, in my humble opinion, but I had no intention of breaking a promise to Faith so had to get the bike on the car and hurry home..
Anyway, I managed to arrive with 12 minutes to spare.
Part of the promise was Ice Cream, and THAT'S what's important to 5 yr olds, isn't it?

Smashing day, all in all

This route is ideal for the rider looking for a challenging and scenic day enjoying the spectacular views and rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds. Using the first and last 40 kms of the longer route it misses out the middle third but still packs 1350meters of climbing into its 100-kilometre route. Featured climbs include Life Hill (Sledmere), Fimber, Thixendale Wold, and Nunburnholme...

343.03 minutes
67 miles ( a bit more than 100k ...)

1 food stop - full of goodies, cakes, wraps, bananas & drinks
At the end- veggie pasty, chips & beans, cakes & as much tea as I could drink, with a nice polo souvenir t-shirt
Top speed - 46.9 mph :bicycle: (bottom speed about 3mph & I fell off

Almost perfect conditions, overcast but warm a gentle (?) easterly breeze....

Good companions & other riders on the route

Large menagerie of dead animals at the side or middle of the road, usual mice, birds, rabbits, hedgehogs & impressively (though sad) a badger (Thixendale is now known as dead badger hill) & Mrs craigwend passion & commitment to cycling may also have died somewhere on the route.

Strangely with it being 'cool' 60' I don't think I drank enough; though craved water over energy drinks at the feed stop.

May add a picture later when they appear...

I went out before breakfast this morning when it was cool. A nice loop (37 miles, 1hour 55min, 19.1 mph avg) around Loch Leven (the largest Loch in the Scottish Lowlands) with an easterly headwind on the way out and a tailwind on the way back. The days incident was my plastic bottle of electrolyte drink cracking open down the side when i took a sip. Looked like one of these TdF riders pouring liquid round their neck... Luckily i had 2 bottles. Slowed down by going down the Arlary minor road which has a lot of equestrian goings on. This morning there were a lot of horses out for exercise, 3 abreast taking up the whole road. Now, if us cyclists did that.....

Seems strange but i often feel better on fasted rides than carbo'd up ones. Not sure why.
Enjoyable afternoon escaping the heat and watching the TdF and golf on the telly.

If that doesn't cure it, likely a cracked bearing, still not too drastic.

Early start this morning, for an oft pedalled circuit to the west of Carlisle, out along the Solway and back. The usual route is around 42 miles, and reasonably flat(ish) so today I added a bit on the end to get a bit of altitude in, which turned out to be just a tad over 50miles and 1600ft... in 3hours.

All in all a great ride, although I did encounter a tosspot cyclo-evangelist who pointed at me and barked "HELMET!" across the road at me. Yeah, I wasn't wearing one as it's too damn hot .
