A lovely sunny morning for a short spin of 9 miles around my local very muddy country park, back is still a bit painful!

:sun: For the first time in months I was cycling in bright sunshine, a tad cold with plenty of frozen puddles and odd ice patches about first thing, but it warmed up nicely as the morning progressed, it was a tad windy but I seemed to have it as a tail or side wind most of the time, noticed it a bit on the way back though, I went to the Rural centre at Wistow by a fairly direct route but meandered greatly on the way back, got back in and had managed to do 70 miles. Seen lots of cyclists out, and the Cafe was very busy.

After the 40mph blowout on Friday I needed something different so son #2 and I hired a couple of mountain bikes and had a mess about in Derwent Valley
Great fun. Two incidents to report:
Carried bikes over a stream but on the way back I dared son to go through it. He managed it no problem. I miserably failed and ended up to my ankles in a freezing mountain stream
Son dared me to go down a short, steep offroad descent to a picnic table. I have no skill in this area but gave it a go. Went over the handlebars (doing all of about 3mph) and ended up in a bramble bush

Literally everything I was wearing now in the washing machine

Still chilly but at least the sun was out. 16 mile ride with Mrs Aud who is now getting to grips with a road bike (from MTB) so a bit slow but nice to get out in the sun.

72 miles with a mate, over the Chiltern hills & into Oxfordshire and back. On the carbon bike for the first time this year, the sun was shining in places & I even undone the zip a bit on my top. Spring is in the air.....

A sparkling day here in the flatlands with only a light breeze- perfect cycling weather. Despite a touch of 'wine flu' (after last nights Valentines disco down the local Brtish Legion club - livin' the dream folks, livin' the dream!) I couldn't stay in on such a great day, so decided to head up into the 'hills' for a change, to the east of Newmarket where Suffolk and Cambridgeshire tend to blur somewhat and you can even get as high as 350 feet above sea level! Ended up doing about a 40 mile or so circuit.

This is near Dullingham - looking down toward Cambridge

A little further past a village called Ashley, the middle of the road here forms the Cambs/ Suffolk boundary. Here is the bike straddling both counties (rear wheel in Suffolk). In the background, some stunning views well into Norfolk.

At Moulton there is this lovely old flint bridge

Cambridgeshire is Britain's most over lit county. Even the tiniest of hamlets is infested with streetlighting. The council are obsessed with lighting everywhere up like Las Vegas. I sometimes wonder why they don't go the whole hog and light up the hedgerows while they're at it. It's nothing a decent airgun won't sort out, but really one shouldn't have to make the effort. Suffolk has a far more civilised approach and most small villages are thankfully unlit. Moulton has a few lights but nowhere near what Cambs has - above you can see on of the few lamps.

Back on my usual turf and down to sea level again - this is the Lodes Way near Wicken Fen - plenty out on bikes today. The works are preparations for a much needed new ped/ cyclist bridge over one of the waterways. As yet there is no funding available for the bridge- just the preparations. Meanwhile the A11 is being dualled at several million quid per mile and they're about to spend a billion or so on the A14. Good to see we have our priorities right in the UK.

This is cycling bliss for me. Miles from the nearest infernal combustion engine with just the sound of the wheels, the wind and the birds and pausing occasionally for a mardle with passers by. No doubt some of the ''there are perfectly adequate cycle paths in Britain already - they're called roads'' nitwits from the Campaigning and Policy section on here would rather we were all on the A14 instead and say that this route is an unnecessary expense.
In the background is Wicken village windmill.

Then a nice easly pootle home via Lode and Bottisham. It had been feeling rather warm up until now and I was in shorts (sorry to anyone who had to see that sight!) but it was now beginning to feel quite cool so I upped my pace a bit and guzzled about gallon of tea on my return home.

I managed to persuade both my brother and sister to come out for a ride today.:wahhey:Jenny hasn't been out on a bike for over a year so this was quite an event and we did an easy route down into the Quarry again. There were absolutely loads of people down there which meant that riding along Victoria Avenue was a bit of a slalom course.

After we'd ridden the length of the avenue and back, I left Doug and Jenny to make their own way home and headed off on a route of my own. It was one of the usual - via Shrewsbury, Upton Magna, Wroxeter, Cressage, Acton Burnell and Condover.

I had a stiff headwind all the way to Cressage and by the time I turned so the wind was behind me felt like there was nothing left in my legs. There were a couple of good bits though where the wind was directly behind and I was able to cruise along at an easy 18-20 mph for a mile or two.

Today's distance was 30.5 miles with an 11.4 mph average speed.

Lovely ride until I came off on a slippery roundabout out near Netlebed, South Ox. Entirely my own stupid fault, trying to corner at speed on the cross bike with full-on cross tyres. Bike OK, just a few bits bent but nothing serious, gloves shot and my lovely assos bibs torn. Two bloody knees, a sore ass and badly damaged pride as there were three other cyclists close by who saw it, always is someone close by when I make a tit of myself lol

Nice ride in the sunshine, making a change from most of my night rides,

big blue skies, not littered by the unecessary 'scenery' of many other counties...

The sun began to set towards the end of the ride & the temperature dropped,
still good to see the snowdrops out, some snow still at the edge of the fields,
the fields themselves still waterlogged, & not as much flooding as a few weeks ago...
