I had my first attempt at cycling to Stratford-upon-Avon yesterday afternoon from Birmingham. Managed to get a decent looking route from cyclestreets.net and uploaded it to MotionX and set off just after 4 o clock.
Didn't start well as I managed to take the long way getting to Earlswood Lakes thinking I knew best instead of following the map. That added about 2 miles extra. The next biggest problem was not having a bike mount for my phone so I kept having to get it out my pocket to check directions. This led to me getting lost twice and having to double back and subsequently stopping at every junction to check directions.
It's a lovely route though, mainly back roads and country side, couple of stretches on busy main roads, but nothing too bad. The final section into S-u-A was down the NCN route 5 which is a tow path next to the canal which luckily for me was in pretty good condition but still a bit rough for a road bike.
According to Cyclemetre it took me 2 hours and 34 miles and I covered a distance of 27.5 miles. Not sure how accurate that is as the GPS went a bit wonky about half way around. I think I did more miles but it took me a little longer.
When I made it into S-u-A I hadn't actually realised I was there, just assumed it was another town on the way.. Nice place though. I believe Shakespeare might be from there, you wouldn't know from visiting though.
