Went on a tour out around the Cardington area. I took the Hawk (knockabout bike) this time as I knew the lanes would be muddy and I have only just cleaned the Raleigh. There were plenty of other cyclists about for a change and it was a good ride (apart from the odd shower), until I had a bit of a disaster.
The road between Cardington and Church Preen School has some nice flowing downhill sections. On one of these bits I was doing about 25 miles an hour and as I approached a corner I realised there was something in the road right on the line I was about to take.
The front wheel missed it but the back didn't. The rear end kicked sideways and there was a bang and a clatter as the object pinged into the hedge, followed by a knocking and shimmy which I instantly assumed was the back tyre going flat.
After coming to a fairly abrupt halt I found the tyre was still inflated but the impact had snapped two spokes.
There was no sign of the thing I'd hit - I can't be sure as I only saw it for a moment but I think it might have been some part that had fallen off a car.
With two spokes gone the wheel is now not the usual shape you'd expect, so I had to disconnect the back brake and take a fairly leisurely ride the remaining 14 miles home.
Time to raid the spares box again.
27.7 miles at an average 12.3 mph. Cyclists greeted: About 15. Disasters: 1. Curses: Lots.
