A few days late but.... hey ho
Monday's ride took was a 'usual' one for me in the North Pennines that I do at least a couple of time a year, but this time is slightly different as a couple of changes have made it a whole lot better.
Starting a Jockey Shield, I headed along the minor road to Castle Carrock but instead of continuing through the village, I took advantage of the new bridleway - which was recently upgraded following a successful claim by the local community, which gives lovely views over the reservoir
After that I headed down to Newbiggin using a B road, a U road and another bridleway, passing through the village of Cumrew on the way. Once at Newbiggin the hard word began I slowly climbed the bridleway which passes between Cumrew Fell and the main Pennine massif. The track is steep and loose and once you loose traction and stop, it's just too steep to get going again, so it ends up as a walk/push
... but in doing so it gives you chance to savour the views across the Eden Valley to the Lakeland Fells....
Once at the top of the BW it's a nice long downhill run into Geltsdale, with unfolding views like this...
Eventually arriving at the brand new bridle bridge over New Water (bike shown for scale)
@Cush - the abutment of the old bridge can be seen to the left
After a rest (and a paddle in the stream) it's onwards with more contouring moorland track ...
...which crosses Old Water Bridge.
...and then continues on as more deserted moorland track before curving westwards to the northern slopes of Geltsdale before hitting an excellent U-road which makes for some super quick off riding
Finally it's just a short downhill through on a steep BW through Hynam Wood, which is full of bluebells this time of year, and then a short sharp pull on another U-road to get back to the start point.
Gamrin tells me 15miles/1600ft @ 7.5mph... rides like this aren't about speed though, are they?
