Mmm today's ride was hilly. Not the normal type of hilly but deliberately painful. It started off with a passing comment I might do the Strava segment "A Masochists Delight" in short a segment that links three of the nastiest but individually short climbs in quick succession. Two at there max are about 1:5 and one is a 1:4. Quite why I thought about doing this let alone coming out with the statement I will never know:dry:. The next error was letting @400bhp plot the route. He likes his steep hills:evil:I'm more of a tempo long climb kind of a guy. I know this area well and looked at the proposed route and thought interesting haven't tried some of those roads.
Met at the RV and headed off to Bollington. Got to the start of the first climb Blaze Hill and promptly had my chain jump off the cassette as l changed down and watched 400 bhp disappear into the distance. Got the chain back on and went on up the climb. I had ridden it recently so new when to push and when to sit and spin. Met Mr BHP at the top of the climb onto the next and probably the hardest of the three Pyms Chair. It is a right bugger and I had avoided it for probably three years. It hadn't got easier. The 25% bit after nearly a mile is orrible. It is one of those hills where the chimp in your head says "what are you doing that for? You really don't need to you could stop and get off". Anyway I told the hairy fecker to bog off and grunted up the rest of the climb. Then onto the next climb Goyt Lane out of the Goyt Valley. Probably the easiest in terms of gradient, but dead straight for probably half a mile plus and there are no noticeable features to use as a point of reference so you think great I am half way up only to see a car appear over the summit and you realise you are only a quarter of the way up. Got to the top and rolled down into Buxton then up the Cat and Fiddle road peeling off towards Congleton to stop at Blaze Ice Cream Farm for sustenance. Ice cream was the order of the day Very nice it was as well. @potsy this one is for you buddy. View attachment 46241

Gratuitous bike shot.

We were feeling the climbing which at that point was 3000 ft over 20 miles. I asked 400bhp which way we were heading back to which he replied the Barsteward Hill near Wildboar Clough. Mmm odd name I thought. As you probably have guessed by now that is not its proper name more a description of what you call it as you struggle up it. Up another interesting climb out of Langley village which was pretending it wasn't a climb by being shrouded in trees, bloomin was though. Back onto the Cat and Fiddle Road. Can't be anymore climbs I know this road too well. Wrong we cut through down to Rainow where instead of following the normal Kerridge Road the route decided climbing up the steep climb to the higher road would be better:banghead:. Back through Bollington and Prestbury and a few miles across the plain and back home. 50ish miles 5000ish feet of climbing. Not the hilliest of rides in the area but the severity of the climbs encountered made it character building.

Nice riding 71!
I recognise that place...Mr Bhp must have punished me round there in the past!
If you let him do the route then expect steep stuff and/or an off road section :-)
I take it your bike is on the left with the aggressive position?
P.s. What is that tree stump meant to be? :-)

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Oh ... nope, not him then. He always rides with just one bottle on his bike.

Mystery. Looks like col, rides a steel basso (red) wears a camelbak.

I decided at 4pm to go out with the older lad for a quick ride down to the Helix and back as it was warm and not windy.
There are no photos and when I explain what happened that may be a good thing!!

All was fine and we took a turn around the local woods behind the Kelpies.
On the way back, as we cycled round the Helix to go out of the park, we rounded a sharp bend. I couldn't quite believe what was in front of my eyes!
A man, standing on the path with his willie in his hand!!
We stormed by him and he grinned at me...it was really un-nerving.
My son was behind me and he drew level and said "Did I just see what I thought I saw?!'
Yes. You did!

We ploughed home and I called the Police. I felt a bit daft (what if he had been having a pee and we disturbed him? But he was not peeing as we rode by!) but they were brilliant.
I got a ride in a Police car (felt like a criminal as they wouldn't let me sit in the front ) and we went back to the spot so I could point it out to them.
As soon as I called in they had sent a patrol car round the area.
They have just been back to visit with some mug shots. Thank god it was of faces!

I couldn't identify anyone but they said not to worry, they are going to check CCTV and get back to me tomorrow evening with some more shots they couldn't access to print off.
I think I'll get a GoPro.....

Yep that is my bike. The ice cream farm is a cracking stop always seem to stop there when doing a hilly ride. You can get there without hitting the really steep stuff, just spin up the Cat and Fiddle and turn right to Congleton. I have a very very slow time on the Strava segment past it cos I always stop for a feed. ^_^
The carving is a lamb, looked like Shaun the Sheep.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

I went about 16 miles today. I saw a nice new truck terminal near I-39, Nussbaum Trucking.
(No actual nut trees here, though.)

Traveled through some wide open spaces.

And traveled past this radio tower near I-55.

The roads look a bit crowded GA

I believe it is an antenna with a name as owner/operator that is associated with Commonwealth Edison, a large utility company that is quite active around Chicago, but not around here.

Great stuff- thanks. Was hoping it was an AM station I could add to my really very interesting trans-Atlantic list. I regularly pick up WEGP from Presque Isle, Maine here in winter on 1390khz. In fact I emailed them once to let them know I could hear them from all the way across the Atlantic, and they were somewhat understandably unimpressed ^_^ . I really should get out more.

Great photos! (Puts anorak on) Do you know which station(s) broadcast from that stick? (Takes anorak off with apologies to all non radio anoraks) ^_^

I often have good ideas, sometimes they work and sometimes not so well. Yesterday and today was probably the latter. Looking at the forecast [why???] we couldn't decide whether to ride over to a friends to fix her daughters bike which I had sourced for her some time ago or take the car. The bikes won so we dragged out the touring bikes, loaded up the panniers and set off, into a very fresh headwind.
The next four pictures give a flavour of the first half of the day

Next we take to the guided busway to Cambridge, always wanted to try this out. We had to ask a guy on a road bike where you got on to it but he was very off hand and quite rude in his reply, like doesn't everyone know where it is? It turned out he was also going on it but we got held up by the lights. I had an inkling what was going to happen. dr_pink was miffed, properly miffed in fact and when I looked down at my speedo to see it reading 21 mph into a brutal headwind with me hanging on for grim death [this on a touring bike with panniers] I knew the chaps number was up. He did his best, he really did, unfortunately he had no idea he had an enraged exocet on his case. He was duly disposed of.

Suffolk "hills" sans hedgerows, no help from the wind
C17E741B-16CF-423D-928C-A7DC9EF77BDF_zpshxtzw5zj.jpg

With 6 hrs and 40 mins of riding into a constant headwind we arrived a our friends house in Woolpit, just over 100 miles done with the prospect of doing it all again tomorrow [today].
The wind had changed direction. enough said really without using banned expletives, we now had a northerly which got progressively stronger as the hills got bigger , I see it as punishment for my many past sins, dr_pink sees it as a training opportunity, sigh.
You know you are in Suffolk when

To be fair some of the roads in Suffolk were a treat

Back into Newmarket and a sight dr_pink had not seen before
14366DCC-50B7-4306-BC80-4A8EF93E0815_zpsrewqwk7s.jpg

We stopped at some friends at Histon for lunch but ended up staying way too long, almost 2 hours so we had to crack on. Along the river Cam in Cambridge.

The next 50 miles were tough, and that is not in anyway an understatement. Guess how a stranger would know they had reached Rutland
B3BE04F6-1EF8-4784-A31F-FC0F16F6D971_zpsambfkodw.jpg

Just over 200 miles into a permanent headwind, is that a record? 13 hrs 55 mins and from experience we knew we would have been a couple of hours quicker with fair winds. Mind you we had our touring gears on, 53/39 and 12-25 ^_^. dr _pink is now allowed an extra portion of rocket [she actually consumed a whole cookie but don't tell anyone]. I feel remarkably good, tomorrow could be another story.

We went to Blaze farm on the NCC ride if you remember?

And, yes, we included the same b'stard hill that comes shortly after the cafe stop. I wanted 71 to see the view from the top.^_^

Ah yes, I remember it now!

I don't remember the view - I was too busy trying to get my breath back and keep my lunch down
