Old Plodder

Living at the top of a steep 2 mile climb
Just back in from my 20 mile loop again; was going to go in just jersey & longs, but noticed some spots of rain on our porch so took the gilet, just as well, as I think I would have been very cold without it. Uphill into a head wind for the first 10 miles again, but still got back in 1hr 45min - happy with that.
(Forgot to mention, it was on the s/spd again.)

After an 02:00 finish at work,I took the old SS bike out for a spin this morning just to keep the legs turning. I dropped down a back track behind the local houses to a pond and across the stream into the fields. It's the border between Northampton & Wellingborough, hence the development stops and the fields begin.

After this, it's uphill through the rape fields and then a bit more up through a pasture into Ecton village.

Obligatory seasonal lamb picture......

After Ecton, I checked to see if anyone was using the open air lido in Overstone.

Nah.. still empty. Last time I passed there it was frozen, so it must be a bit warmer now!
I rode past the lakes and through the wood to Court Farm and was met by a bit of an obstruction on the track.

It was an old mate of mine, Dean, earning a living by blocking my way home... Bloody lorry drivers!
Anyway, I stopped riding and he stopped working while we had a chat for 15 mins or so then I had to get back so I could grab some lunch and get to work myself.

Not a long ride, but always good to get out and about

^_^

Here for rides.
Had a nice chat with a middle-aged 'sports cyclist' on a Felt. I felt no compulsion to follow him when he sped off having established I was en route to work and he was on a bummel.

Only one driver in 1:04 of riding tried to kill me, but failed, and the new showers at the new offices are a joy. The landlord's cycle parking provision is a shocker though. I locked my bike to the cage around one of our A/C condensers.

Feeling thusly inspired I might nick off early and do 50km on the way home.

55.32 Miles today in two rides. The first on the MTB to Goring along the bridleway/Thames path to Goring for Breakfast of French toast, bacon banana and maple syrup and a pot of Earl Grey tea. Then back.

The off to Marlow via Henley on Thames to visit LBS for some shoe shopping and CTW paperwork doodads, the road to Marlow from Henley is about eight miles of some of the nastiest tarmac I’ve ever left rubber on, what a horrible bastard road. Mooched about Saddle Safari, had a bit of lunch in Costa then back again with a slight detour via Hurley, up Remenan Hill, where the enemy needed a pee, stopped at a pub which was closed, so she pee’d in their compost pile (it was enclosed I think), then very fast downhill into Henley then back the way we came home. Lovely rides out today, warm with a bit of a head wind on the way back and a spatter of rain.

18 odd miles home from work. I fiddled with my saddle en-route. I wish I hadn't. It all went a bit numb

83 miles today - that's my fifth 100km plus ride this month. Did my usual, just set off and followed my nose. Left the house at 05:50 and for the first time in ages didn't need my lights. Started off cloudless and I thought it looked like being a nice day, but then the cloud rolled in and didn't go away until I got home. Very little wind and very quiet on the roads

Another 15.5 miles under my saddle.
The weather was to break later in the day so I decided I'd get in an early one.
I waited for the boy to get off to school and then I set off. The usual route via The Kelpies (I now shout 'Hi boys!' on my way through ) and onto the towpath, up to the Falkirk Wheel, where I had a cereal bar and a drink, before heading on up the hill to the top to catch the other canal towpath home.
I decided as the path was quiet, I'd stay on the bike and pedal up it. Usually I find pedestrians a good excuse to get off and walk but there were none about so early this morning.
Lowest gears, head down and plod up. I've found the trick for me is not to look too far ahead - I see the hill and panic!
As I was concentrating I passed another cyclist walking....thinking, those are familiar feet. Yip, my lad had given up and walked
I'm 50. He's 19. That made me feel good
I am getting fitter but I do worry about my calves and thighs starting to resemble those of a Russian shot-putter! Still, combined with the adrenalin rush if startled, they could probably take me to John 'O Groats.

Half way mark and the sun was still out. We rode side by side for part of the way as there was no-one about, and saw herons, swans, ducks and ducklings...the first I've seen this year (minus the ducklings I got to hold on a farm trip with my little grandsons last month lol).
Everything was looking so green and fresh and it really made for a wonderful ride. I could have kept going but I hadn't planned a route and I'm not one for unannounced diversions! It unsettles me.

I got home and decided Priscilla needed a wash as she hadn't had one after the last couple of rides as it's been dry.
So I'm outside, bent over the bike, busy with a bucket of water and the brush and I hear the water splashing about....turned around to see the dog with his head in my bucket, drinking the warm water!

I just need to lube the chain later and clean the disc brakes and she's good to go again.
I'm due to ride to Edinburgh on Saturday for Pedal on Parliament...it's a bit weather dependant for me and there's a huge obstacle in my way...if I manage it, I'll come back and let you know!
