I headed out for a ride after work tonight, in nice warm sunshine, so shorts were in order  with some more new cycling territory for me.

I headed out through the estate and encountered the biggest knobhead I have come across on a bike ride yet, driving a taxi (what a surprise). I was pootling along at 15 mph and could see him approaching a junction on the left. If he had pulled out when I 1st saw him then it would have been fine, but oh no he waits until I get within about 6 ft of him, clearly making eye contact with me and decides to pull out in front of me, causing me to brake hard. I try not to react in these situations but I was fuming and so shouted at him and gave him the V sign as he pulled away to the T junction not far ahead. I had to then cycle virtually past him to access the service road that leads to the sports village and so I shouted at him as to whether he was blind or just plain stupid and he just have me a gormless look. I then got some revenge as I was going to use the crossing that leads to the sports village car park and with no traffic coming I would normally just cycle across, to save making any traffic stop by the time the lights react and turn to red. However I could see he had turned right onto this road and so I cycled across and then pressed the button so that he had to stop as I cycled off into the car park and down towards the river. May seem petty but I was :cursing: and this is exactly why I am not courteous to taxi drivers when I am driving.

Right, and breathe, the rest of the ride was great as I headed to upton magna and then down the Pelham road onto Rodington Heath and then onto new roads to Roden, Poynton and Bings Heath, joining the NCN 45. They are nice lanes for cycling on, not scenic but mostly flat and good when you just want to press on. I then climbed up ebury hill and the outskirts of haughmond hill, before the brilliant downhill run into upton magna and back to Uffington.

I then took the old canal path all the way to the underpass for a change and back along the cycle path home.

A like for exploring new ground. I use that bit of the NCN when riding to Shawbury and like how easy it is to keep up a steady pace on those flat bits.^_^

A total of 195 miles from Dieppe to Paris taking in Vernon. Having discovered that the place was fifteen miles off route it just cried out to be visited. Peered at Monet's garden through the hedge on theway back from Vernon. Wild camped three nights. The route into Paris was chaotic and the stuff of nightmares. Pics to follow tomorrow.

^ Look forward to the pics sounds great

I got Doug out for another ride today and made it a hilly one; Condover, Longnor, over Folly Bank to Cardington, Hughley, Harley and back via Cound, Pitchford and Condover again.

For once the wind was light so the riding was easy and although it was a bit chilly after a bit of fog this morning we risked going for shorts, which proved to be a good move once we started climbing.

The pace at the start wasn't too bad and I was actually having to warn Doug not to press on too hard and save some energy for the climb. In the event he wound his way up without any trouble (last time I took him this way he needed to stop and rest part way) and by the top reckoned he could have kept on climbing.^_^ (I might hold him to that and take him up to Yell Bank on a future ride :secret:)

After a bite to eat at the top we dropped into Cardington and on to the road to Hughley. The earlier climb must have taken its toll a little as he wasn't very quick up the climbs on this section but we both enjoyed the fast sweeping downhills. This is a nice place to ride as the road is reasonably wide with good views of Wenlock Edge and there is practically no traffic on it most of the time - recommended for anyone visiting the area.

Next stop was Harley - it was actually a half mile detour off the route but I wanted to have a quick look. Harley's claim to fame is that it is one of the 53 Thankful Villages - parishes where all the men who went to fight in the Great War came home alive.

Moving on we headed to Cound where the terrain became a bit more lumpy again. Doug found his second wind around here and was heading up the hills better than I expected. By Condover he was starting to flag again but we still set a reasonable pace to the A49 junction where I nearly ran into the back of a car  (there was a gap in the traffic, car starts to move off, I start to move off, find it hard work and look down to see what gear I'm in - "oh drat, I'm still in high range" - look up and find car hasn't gone after all , brake just in time to avoid an impact). I don't make a habit of this kind of thing - honest.:shy:

32.5 miles today at 11.7 mph average which Doug is really chuffed with as it was showing as about 10mph at Cardington and he thought it would stay that low for the rest of the trip.

Yours truly trying not to laugh. Caer Caradoc is the backdrop and we're about to start the Folly Bank climb

Doug, tired but happy after completing the climb.

Home to the N&N hospital again tonight. I left a touch early and went the longer route. Instead of turning off at Roundwell, I went straight along, parrallel to the A11 and up the hill and over the bridge and dropped down into Eaton. Then turned left along the cycleway on Bluebell Road, cut through UEA drive and on to Earlham Road (B1108), down the hill, back up the long drag and left at the lights into the hospital complex.

Nice ride. 11.04 in 50.05, 12.9mph average.
On the way I had to slow down to pass a cow being led back to its field. That was a first for me. I saw a little mouse crossing the road, running along the path and into someone's drive, I also slowed a bit to let a fox cross the road. All accompanied by the scent of blossom and very little traffic. A good ride, I enjoyed it.

Four of us were planning on a ride this morning, as I have work this afternoon. First text at 22:30 last night.. Can't make it.. Second text at 07:15 this morning..can't make it..they must have seen the weather forecast or summat :rain:
Anyway, the group ride ended up as Bob and me. It was spotting with rain when we left and got heavier as we got further away from home.
I chose a regular route with a few new turns I'd not been along much recently.

Looking down one of my favourite bridleways to Whiston Ford and up to Cogenhoe via Jerusalem Steps. Still, wrong bike today so we stayed on the roads.

Bob had his new bike today, obviously a test to see if it's waterproof

Mmmmmmm, tasty!
Back home past Sywell Airfield against the wind. At least the rain had stopped by now, probably because we'd nearly finished the ride! We went our seperate ways at this point, Bob heading to the other side of town, me with only a mile to get home.

Just over 23 miles for me, about 15 of them in the wet. Nice to get out though..
Off to work now

I have a cold, I am bunged up, it is raining enthusiastically and has been all day. I needed to go to the bank and get a bit of shopping, the nearest shop is 5 miles away. I feel pants and I have a man flu. I decide to go in the car, I have a perfectly serviceable car to take care of the task in hand, it is a new car, its warm, waterproof, comfortable, has a radio and auto wipers, which work. It is also free to park for two hours in my local town. It is very wet outside and I am on deaths door. I walk through the garage, past my cycle helmet, my very good and hardly used, expensive waterproof cycle clothes, and my lovely smart Whyte Coniston hybrid bicycle, with mudguards and carriers and working lights, I walked passed them and go and sit in the car put my key in the ignition ready to start my journey. Did I mention I have a cold and I feel crap? I can see my lovely smart Whyte Coniston hybrid bicycle, through the car window and garage side door. I then got out of the car, went back into the house got changed in all the cycle gear, waterproofs, shoes, I pumped the tyres up and cycled the 5 miles to the shops and bank, after taking care of business, I went straight back home. It rained all the way there and back but I was nice and dry and warm, I had a nice ride and now feel self righteous.

Just the 10 utilitarian miles today. I am now having a cheddar cheese sandwich and tomato soup because I have cold and a cheddar cheese sandwich and tomato soup makes me feel better. Comfort food, that's what you need when you are on deaths door.
