I need your help! My daughter and I went for a late walk on Cannock Chase last night. It was very dark but in the beam of my Volt 1200, a mystery beastie was spotted.

It was flying amongst trees with what looked like a rapid fluttery wing beat. It was quite light in colour. Hard to define in the harsh light but I would describe it as a sort of tan colour.

It looked to be the size of a small bird. I don't think it was a bat due to the colour and the fact it wasn't going very fast. I'm thinking some sort of (beho)moth? Any ideas?
Don't think it was a moth, too early in the year for large ones. Best guess is some sort of bat as they will emerge during a mild weather.
Hope this helps.

Stroll around Grune Point with Mrs 26. Huge flocks of Barnacle Geese with some Pink Footed Geese mixed in. One solitary Curlew which is very sad as this used to be Curlew central. Populations have crashed. Teal about which is a bit unusual here. Lovely views of Yellow Hammer and a wonderful view of a Hare. Otherwise mostly expected stuff.

Unusually no wind here today. I does blow a hoolie here quite regularly but we even had sun and wonderful views to Scotland, the Pennines and the Lakeland Fells.

Edit: Forgot to mention the two Ravens which flew over. Not seen Raven here before.

The Kittiwakes are returning back to nest on the Tyne Bridge towers. Though they'd normally nest on sea cliffs this colony heads up the Tyne to nest on the bridge and surrounding buildings. It's 8 miles inland; the furthest inland nesting colony in the world.

I popped down in my lunch hour to see that they're busy getting settled on their ledges again. Nearby there's a place where I sometimes see a Peregrine. I had a look but it wasn't on any of the perching spots. I turned around just in time to see it swooping in, wings folded, to coast in to rest on a perch

I had a hummingbird hawk moth in the garden today fluttering round the flowering daphne.

@rich p the colouring is correct. My, that is one awesome beastie. I figured perhaps surlydave was right but I'd just didn't have a bat's flight characteristics. It flew quite slowly with a very fluttering wing beat. Thanks for that photo, easily the most impressive insect I have seen even in photo form.
are they still allowed on the Baltic ?

I might pop down to cullernose the morn see if they are back
Oh yes, they're very welcome on the Baltic - unlike some of the hotels on the Newcastle side who are asking permission to put up deterrents

Last year there was a webcam focussed on the Baltic ledges to show some of the nests.

Red Squirrel on my ride on Tuesday in the lane heading for Mungrisdale and 3 females with one male Goosander on the Derwent in Cockermouth on Wednesday.

Lots of Buzzards about today and a magnificent display of lesser celandines on the way to Redmarley D'Abitot. The wild daffs were showing well too today.
