I’ve seen some small flocks of under 10 birds here in Devon. Any Fieldfare?

Not seen any Fieldfare but the redwings were just observed from my bike so a mixed flock is possible. Lots more presumably migrant blackbirds than I usually see.

Best unexpected spot last weekend was a Purple Heron! If you are going to see a rare bird it might as well be a big one.

A big purple one! Not see one of those for a while, and certainly not in this country.

We have a Red Kite that must be local to us, possibly one of the ones that were re-introduced up near Penny Hill, Barnard Castle years ago.
I think they were bred up at Rowlands Gill or Gibside. I've left the wildlife camera pointing into the field after chucking a couple of scaly tails over the wall, hoping the Kite will come for them, but never had any luck. I've seen it flying over many a time and even landing in an adjacent field but it's not come down in the one behind us. I'm surprised I've not seen any taken by Buzzards either.

I was at Gigrin Farm in Wales a few weeks back, there the feed was small cut scraps of decent looking meat.

So may I suggest in the style of a works Christmas do, you nail a menu of starter, main and pudding with 3 options each (including vegetarian options) and see which boxes the kites tick….

It could work.

With or without brandy?

Enjoyed a fabulous trip to RSPB Loch Leven this morning. Lots of teal, wigeon, whoopers etc on the loch/ponds, but the stars today were the numerous red squirrels, had fabulous views of over a dozen of them, never seen so many in one place before. On previous visits we’ve considered ourselves lucky to see even one, so we really hit the jackpot today
