Would Joining a Cycling Club be Right For Me?

We are mostly grown ups. I am sure people can make up their own minds as to whether they want to join a cycling club or not. And I really don't think anyone needs to have belonged to one to have a reasonable idea of what it involves.

This topic has shown that many people's views on clubs are different from the experiences of many of us who belong to one..

Only to be expected. I imagine that cycling clubs might attract those that are into group riding, the camaraderie, the social side of cycling etc.. Some of us just want to go for a bike ride on our own terms without any of that. Therefore, cycling clubs are of no interest. But it doesn't make us "anti"!

No you are right, they are just not for you. But there is so much more to a decent club than many see, take for instance my old pal in a nursing home, most of his visitors are club members, people looking out for each other.

Not sure who that comment is directed at, but if it was myself or others who prefer not to join a club, let me explain.

I am not anti cycling clubs. It's a common mistake made on CC that if someone doesn't want to partake in something (see "wearing a helmet", for example) then they are somehow "anti" that activity. That is not the case.

For my part, I have a similar view to @Rusty Nails in that I prefer to suit myself as to when I cycle, where I cycle, what distance I cycle, what route I take, when and where I stop; and all these things are subject to change during the ride! This obviously does not fit in with the concept of group riding, and I see no other reason for joining a cycling club.
That does not make me anti cycling club. If it floats your boat, carry on. But it's not for me, thanks.

If I was directing my comments at an individual I would make that clear. I was simply expressing my view. I see many posts which are dismissive of roadies, clubs, snide remarks about lycra, etc. It genuinely leaves me bemused, I do not understand why some cyclists choose to be dismissive, often rude, about fellow riders who simply like to follow a different aspect of the same sport.

I enjoy solo and club rides but most of all my regular rides with two good friends. We've become good friends through cycling.

There are riders of all types on CC but sadly the only posts I read which are dismissive of a group are always directed at club riders or roadies. I find that very strange. It certainly makes me think and question why this would be?

I agree one can see miserable roadies who never wave or smile. Equally I could say I see a lot of flat bar hybrid/MTB riders who never wave or smile. I don't worry too much about it. Yet some CCers only have to see a single miserable roadie to stereotype us all.

He learned an important lesson, be careful who you ride with.

Let’s be clear.

This wasn’t a new club member
They know how to fix punctures
They had form for deliberately not bringing tools or spare tubes and expecting to use the tools and spares of other club members.
They have never reimbursed other members for tubes lent in the past.

Now if you are happy to keep pandering a club member like this then crack on. The rest of us in the club, who knew this individual’s modus operandi were not.

I wouldn't care to belong to any club that would accept me as a member.

(Attributed with several different variations of wording to Groucho Marx).

You’re the third person to have quoted that!

Only the third, it seems like a lot more.

Abject apologies; I did a search on "Marx", which returned zero results but probably resulted in my details being added to an MI5 database, or possibly an additional entry to an existing voluminous record.

I never with how many times something has been written before, many of us join topics weeks after it has been started.

@Ming - we've had this happen as well. Members have lent tubes to other members when needed and they're always returned.

But one club member never carries anything, using others tubes and tools without re-imbursement. They still don't do despite multiple requests to carry tools/a tube. And were surprised when someone left them to it, pointing out a bike shop a mile away.
