We're talking about showbiz and the media though where the boundries are slightly different.

Why? What is morally better about the act in question because it was done in the 'media'? If anything it makes it worse because the act is more public and therefore more humiliating to the person concerned. You asked me a question, I answered it and you are now dodging the implications by denying the basis of your own question...

By the way, here is no evidence that this was in any way cooked up with the granddaughter - that's just your rather nasty speculation - and whether or not she takes advantage of it for her own career is another issue entirely.

In addition, what does or doesn't annoy you about the reactions of anyone else makes no odds to whether the original action was right or wrong.

Christ, what's wrong with everyone here?
The majority of the call was hilarious.
Sure, they overstepped the line with the granddaughter comment, but the improvised song, with Ross on backing vocals was just genius. "Andrew sachs, annnndrew saaaaachs.."
For anyone who hasn't seen it.
Funny song at 6:30 onwards.

Blown out of total proportion by the media. Far too many papers, radio stations etc are giving out the phone number urging people to complain, and they merrily oblige. People just seem to be jealous of how much they earn, or have hatred for the BBC.
I don't see why they had to take Friday Night off. That's got nothing to do with the radio show, just suspend their radio shows.

Just on the news that they have been suspended.

WHY?

Whatever your personal view and taste, they are artists performing their art.

What they do in a pre-recoreded context is open for them to do as they wish. It must be in a free country.

BUT someone behind the scenes has cocked up and let this out to broadcast when it breaches guidelines. This is the problem, not the artists.

Woss and Brand were clowning around in the knowlege that what they did could be suitably cleared and vetted before broadcast. It was not, that is not their problem.

Do we have to have the whole discussion over again?

I admit I had not gone through all the posts to date but most seemed to be stating if the person liked or disliked them, which is not the point.

They have only just been suspended a few hours ago and I felt the problem lies with the BBC process not with the artists creating the work. So why are they taking the rap?

Has this been done to death?

Nobody died.
Harassment is against the law, and making prank phone calls is a form of harassment.

That's worth remembering as a defence. I wonder if it will be accepted the next time some BNP thugs are rude to a member of an ethnic minority? I would sincerely hope not.

Oh, so they are 'artists'! That makes it OK then: clearly 'art' excuses any requirement for responsibility. I guess I'm a philistine for thinking 'arses' might be a better description...

I kind of agree with this. I've met many creative people who think they can behave in a boorish and rude way purely because they're creative...and for most.of them it's not as if they are stars or semi-autistic geniuses anyway...they're just coathangers in the great household interior of life.
