I managed to pick up a longer recessed Allen bolt from work today so the Ultegra 6500 calipers are now all ready to fit, just need to swap over the brake pads on the new rear caliper.

I also found a Zefal SP2 in the parts bin. Cleaned it up and it fits like a glove, made to measure!

Over the next couple of days I’ll drill out the rear of the fork and fit the calipers.

Nice

Way back we used a drill with a flexible drive attachment for that. Mind you that’s maybe 40 years ago lol.

The old nut and aluminium washer had caused quite a bit of paint damage to the rear of the fork which was bugging me, luckily I found a thin SS washer in my box of bits, I filed it down to clear the BB and really pleased with the results.

However hard I tried, I couldn’t get the right hand side pad to sit straight, a plastic washer from motorcycle fairings cut in half slid between the pad and caliper straightened it up.

Quick update on this, I am not entirely happy about the amount of thread on the original rear caliper in the front fork so I’ve bitten the bullet and bought another front caliper. So the best solution is definitely two fronts, although it does add cost to the conversion.

Replacement front caliper arrived this morning, I’m much happier with it, it fits properly, much more secure and feels far less of a bodge than trying to get the rear one to fit.

So really apart from replacing one of the 531 fork decals I managed to scratch, it’s all finished, really glad I decided to keep it.

Quick update, the front brake felt a bit sticky, the caliper was not returning properly, pulled the inner cable out and it’s knackered, frayed so it’s stopping the caliper returning, my fault for being lazy and not swapping it over. I’ll fit a new one tomorrow.
