Question for fellow Wordlers.
For a long time now (after a mate accused me of taking the soft option) I've been playing in 'Hard Mode', and have always assumed it would make the game more challenging but today's puzzle has got me to think again.
Having got the last two letters ER on the first line I was locked into a simple and impossible guessing game to find the missing three. LAYER. POWER, GIVER etc, etc, ad infinitum. No opportunity to use a clever elimination word to move towards a solution.
So, does Hard Mode stifle creative and intelligent answering?
Thoughts, please.

I switched away from Hard Mode a long time ago. Getting locked into a random guessing game was soul-destroying, judicious use of elimination words is far more rewarding.

So the double R made this a very tricky guessing game.

It's a matter of personal choice. I have tried different approaches, including use of eliminators, and I have landed on my own personal set of rules, one that is like hard mode with knobs on, that I like best.
It does mean that occasionally I get trapped in a guessing game, but words like this are pretty uncommon so I don't mind paying that price.

I used to play "get your eliminators in first", putting down 15 separate letters in three rounds with almost no thought. That may be good strategy if your objective is to finish in the shortest elapsed time, but I got a lot of 5s.
Although I don't play like that now, after two rounds today the danger signs were obvious and I went full eliminator on round three. Leaving it another round might've been too late.
On the face of it, playing hard rules seems to stifle all this creativity, but does it? There was a game some people used to play which was like wordle but the objective was to finish in the greatest number of attempts. I was never any good at it, but clearly what you needed to do was avoid getting railroaded along a disadvantageous route.
With standard rules wordle there's skill and judgement involved but it's generally obvious what you're trying to do. Is it the hard rules game that has the greatest subtleties after all?
