Winter tyres. For my car though.

Our default car last Winter was Mrs BFB's MX5 with Winter tyres F&R - as others have said, the difference really is very marked indeed. We were being held up by X5s and the like during the snow.

Mrs BFB didn't stuff her car into a wall, unlike the previous Winter, so that's empirical proof that they really work!

What tyres are these? My Five was stuck on the drive for over a month last year because of the snow and I've toyed with the idea of getting winter tyres for a spare set of alloys I have knocking about. Living in a housing estate is a bit of a ' mare as we don't get grit - I got stuck five feet from my drive before and stuck trying to get "up" my drive which is level - the up bit is a "curb" which is almost flush to the tarmac  if finances can take it I might go back to FWD & diesel this year.... and something with a bike friendly boot!

I had 4x Goodyear Vector 4Seasons fitted, which are a snow rated all season tyre. They were no more expensive than a summer tyre but are brilliant in the wet. Have yet to try them in snow (only been on for 2 months) but judging by the videos on you-tube they look good. No wear yet either which suprised me.

I'll never buy "summer tyres" ever again.

They were bloody marvelous yesterday I tell thee.

ABS, LSD, rear wheel drive, winter treads and red tartan knee blanket. I am prepared. Bring on the snow!

Actually, bring on the next Ice Age!

Sorry for the delay - we have 195/50 15s on with Hankook W310s fitted - excellent.

Thanks Bonefish - the prices are ridiculous! Guess it's the wrong time of year to be buying and I'm considering changing next year - might be a bad investment as it'll be £660 better off put towards that...

Think that's the wrong route, TBH - we've got a Sport with the big brakes and normally run 16s, but a cheapo set of 15" rims plus the 195/50s can be done for much less. I paid £44 a corner for the Hankooks last year - they've gone up some this year though, just as last year once the snow came, simply because demand is so high.

Camskill have 195/50 Avon CR 85s ar £56 each at the moment, I notice.

Got them on our golf. Perfect yesterday in 3 inches of fresh stuff. Up decent hills etc. let me get to places with few other people for peaceful dog walk. V glad I have them.

I have just had two tyres replaced during a service. One was punctured on the edge of the sidewall and the other was just getting near the limit so I decided that it was worth changing them.

So now I have two Avon Ice Touring 205 55R16 now on the back, non drive wheels, for the time being. The fronts are still on the previous Dunlop SP2000 as they are still good for maybe 4000 miles or so.

The idea is that the Avons won't get as much wear on the back for now and I can swap them to the front when it gets properly cold and then change the Dunlops when they are more worn.

I don't know what they are like in snow and ice yet but the chap who fitted them use them on his own car and sells a lot of winter tyres due to the amount of hills local to him.

I asked for Vredestien but he said there is along wait for them as there is a high demand and they are appeaing in ones and twos as they become available.
I guess that means they are popular.

If I could afford it I would have an extra set of wheels and run summer and winter tyres.
I have been running the Avon Ice Touring tyres on the front of the car this winter and have finally tested them in snow and ice. They are proving to be really good tyres. Shunting a trailer about yesterday in snow and ice on cobbles and it was absolutely fine and grippy on the drive axle.
The rears are still summer tyres and were a bit slidey sideways when reversing the trailer though.
