Agreed on making sure you keep the fun in the rides, my most memorable ones have always been with buddies...

Other Random Thoughts... Spinning, Cadence display / computer, I found it helped - a nice reminder to change gear early.

Hydration, Camelbak or similar, I drink like a, very thirsty drinker lol, fill and almost forget it (makes drinking on the move MUCH easier too).

(PS. Well Done!)

I found over the last few days one of the most important things is "cyclechat". I think I've got a good enough entry level bike , lm now looking into food & drink , sleep a cycle computer for cadence etc :addict: , going to my local cycling club tomorrow for the first time :bicycle::bicycle::bicycle::bicycle:.I have so much to learn :reading: . And most of all I am realizing I should take more time and enjoy my bike and make it fun .

Many thanks for all the advice. A big  to all on cyclechat .

Don't bother! Why ride 100 miles if you're not getting paid to do it,and it knackers you? After about 25 miles the body has had enough exercise for the day so you can't say riding 100 miles is beneficial I knew of someone who thought that riding 100 miles on a Sunday equaled their cardiovascular exercise for the week. A bit like having 3 baths in a day so you don't have to have another till next week.

Riding the big ton is a great achievement,we dont do it for money but for personal merit.I try to push myself that little bit more on each ride i do.Some times it works and on others it doesnt but i love to try and better myself. What is wrong with that.

Out of curiosity, where are you planning on doing your first century?

I've not planned it as such. I've had it in my head as a target that 1day I would be able to ride the century. I'm now thinking of asking if any of my fellow club members would like to escort me on my first century. I have not long missed out on a charity ride that had a 25 / 50 / 100 mile ride..I'm now thinking it should be done by the end of September ;)

There's too much praise being handed out on this thread, you haven't got a chance at your age. 50? who do you think you're kidding?
I look forward to being proved wrong before the end of August:smile:

Lol end of August is my target :bicycle:

Looks as if I was right when I said too old at 50:biggrin:

Come on peter_liver "nearly 90 " is pretty close to 100 in my book, you can still hit the end of August target^_^

My advice as a 59 y.o:

As much as you learn about bike setup, kit, fitness and pace, you also need to learn about nutrition and rest. Once you've got these sorted and can do 60 miles solo, 100 in a group will be a breeze, literally as the drafting will save 25% or more of the effort for you.

A lot of it is how you feel on the day. When I did a century, I started off just intending to go to Cambridge. I got a bit carried away and ended up in Hunstanton.
Not sure whether it was the tailwind, or the ham, egg and chips in Ely. Possibly both!
