Hi Peter, firstly well done on your current rides.

I started cycling only three years ago,a victim of what i call the Wiggins effect.Anyway,my first few rides where around 4 miles, and half way i had to stop for a ten minute breather. Now that seems such a long time but the more you ride the better you get.I did my first 100 last year at the age of 51.I had however done lots of 60/70/80 milers before that.

Just keep doing what you are doing and it will come.Set yourself goals on every ride.next goal 40 miles, then the next goal 50 and so on.But also mix it up with rides on the flat,,rides in the hills, rides around the towns or the countryside. That way you build up your strength and stamina.Thats how i did it anyway.

But the main thing is you enjoy it,i only wish i started years earlier than when i did.

If your knee is gipping you Pete make sure your bike is set up right and use a lower gear than you might normally choose, by that I mean spin your cranks nice and quick rather than trying to mash a big gear. This will put less stress on your knees mate. It works for me and my knees are proper knackered

I don't see why not. I managed 112miles in a day last year at the age of 49.
I started with 30 mile-ish rides. When I could do these easily, I started to add in a few 50 miles rides. When I could so 50's easily, I added 75's. You get the idea. Then I just went for the 100. OK it was hard, but you'd expect it to be. You are doing 6-8 hours of continuous cycling which is asking a lot of anyone let alone a 50 year old.

I've only started ridding a week I'm 50 years young . My first ride was only 8 miles and I literally made myself sick lol .I've aready changed my bike from a triban 3 to a triban 520 after only 3 days . and last night rode 33 miles. 100 appears to be a goal I may have to wait a long time to achieve. I'll keep going as long as it takes though ;)

It took me two years to get up to doing my first 100 miler, and did the 150mile Coast to Coast in day last year, so just give it time and you will get there, i was 51 this year and its all about taking it easy and building up.

If that 8 miles was on that triban 3 you only had for 3 days, then done 30+ miles on your new one:eek:?

I have been riding for years, my longest ride ever has only been 54 miles or so although I have done shorter hard ones. I do intend to increase my distances but not to 100 miles. But for me I dont really have any goals I want to achieve, just some improvements in general.

However I would say go for it, hopefully get it done by the end of the end of the summer before the rain gets cold. If I were to aim for a 100 miler I would procrastinate a bit longer and go for it next year, using this year to up my distances little by little.

EDIT: Im also a little over half your age!

the first 8 mile ride was all hill's. I'd read on the net that if you want to get fit and lose weight you have to climb hills so I worked out the best hills around my local area and went for it and when I got home i could hardly breath, then i got the shakes and had to go and have a lay down... I spoke to the bloke who works a the velodrome only 400 yards from my home and he said I would be better of staying on the flat as best as I can and building my fitness. I found I could then comfortably do ten+ . after getting the t520 15 miles felt OK so I thought let's see what I can do. I'm going to stick to 15 mile a night and try a 30 miler end of next week.

Are you looking to ride 100 miles without stopping or 100 miles in a day. The first may take a few months depending on how often you ride, the latter, a 100 miles in day with breaks between efforts, you could do that next weekend. I see it every year, 1000's of complete newbs coming out and riding over a 100 miles for a annual charity ride. No experience, very little training, yet they manage to ride 100 miles. Break points every 11-12 miles, huge lunch break and 12 hours to complete the ride. It all depends on how quick and contiguous you want to ride your first 100.

I hope to progress similar to you. Reading that others have been in this position and achieved the same goals and how they achieved them is a inspiration.

Forget the 100 just enjoy the ride, before you know it your distance will stretch and you have done 100 miles.

Think of it as a 50 mile ride out but then you need to come back. 33 -50 miles is nothing.

Totally agree with all the food and drink advice, very important.

There's too much praise being handed out on this thread, you haven't got a chance at your age. 50? who do you think you're kidding?

don't push it too far too soon.

Find the distance that is currently an achievable stretch. identify a cafe/pub 3/4 way round the loop.

Do it regularly for a few weeks, keep a record of your times.

You will find it gets easier - you are less knackered - but also that your time are coming down (some days up, some days down, but over time they will reduce)

When you feel it is right, step up the distance.

Develop a portfolio of routes/cafes/pubs

It worked for me.

Maybe a wee bit too much too soon?
You're doing great, bet you could do the 100 at a leisurely pace, by next months.
I was 50 when I did my first and only ^_^ 110 miles in day, having done not more than 50 previously.
Tbh, I got a bit bored towards the end as I was alone.
Try to do it in a group, it makes the miles fly by.
