I've only started ridding a week I'm 50 years young . My first ride was only 8 miles and I literally made myself sick lol .I've aready changed my bike from a triban 3 to a triban 520 after only 3 days . and last night rode 33 miles. 100 appears to be a goal I may have to wait a long time to achieve. I'll keep going as long as it takes though ;)

If you rode 33 miles last night then I would say 100 is an achievable target by the end of June if not quite a while before. You'll find the difference is around food and hydration, eat and drink often and 100 miles isn't that difficult

Hi Peter. 33 miles after such a short time is excellent. It took me about 2 months to get to that distance so well done. Just be careful you do not try to do too much to soon, better to build it up. Agree with Martin as well hydration and food are important to get right as you up your distances.

Take it steady peter, don't make yourself sick. Think about building stamina and break it down, 12mph is a steady average so 100 miles would be, errr 8 hours in the saddle? Get a rhythm going, get an earworm* that matches your cadence, you'll eat the miles up.

That is great progress mate; in a very short time.
But don't go too mad as others have said. You'll be clocking up unbelievable mileage before you know it.
Good luck!

This.
Well done so far, just build on it gently. Apart from food and drink (whatever you like) you just need to get your arse used to spending 8 hours in the saddle and being outdoors in possibly variable weather.
It's very doable.

Agreed.

I would add eat, and particularly drink, little and often.

My cycling skills aren't up to drinking on the move, so I've fallen into the trap of pushing on, then stopping and emptying the water bottle.

It doesn't work.

My goal is just being able to do a few miles each day.
Age and bad knees are not on my side but i would certainly think if you achieved your goal you would have done well.
Problem is your next goal may be 200 miles in a day. ;)

Think 100 miles can be difficult if your on your own i like me but i even i get bored with my own company after a couple of hours in the saddle, better with a few people or sign up for a local sportive

Yes as stated above, a ride buddy is the key to pushing the miles. Even if you are happy in your own company once you get into uncharted territory your inner chimp will be nagging you, telling you that you can't do it. If you ride in a group then you go with the flow. Saying that I quite often go out for long rides alone but prefer a group ride every time. Good luck and congrats on your swift progress :okay:

Thanks for all the advice ..my inner chimp is already riding with me at 30 miles  .I'm going to do 15 miles tonight . I'm thinking it should take about a hour +... I going to take advice with food and drink and maybe do 15 mile a night until next Thursday and try the 30+ ..it took me over 2&half hours ;( but I do find the new bike comfy for a entry level btwin 520 .. I'm also going to enquirer about joining my local club Monday. I think that can only help.
Thanks again for the advice and support ;)

I was a member of my local gym until 12 months ago. Swam a little cross tranner for half an hour a day and jogged 4 nights a week so used to have a OK fitness level. But my knees are giving me grief at my age.. Cycling so far doesn't bother me ;) .I thought I'd find cycling easy ish but I've had my eye wiped :surrender:. Respect to cyclists regularly doing 40 + 90 :notworthy:.

If that 8 miles was on that triban 3 you only had for 3 days, then done 30+ miles on your new one:eek:?

I have been riding for years, my longest ride ever has only been 54 miles or so although I have done shorter hard ones. I do intend to increase my distances but not to 100 miles. But for me I dont really have any goals I want to achieve, just some improvements in general.

However I would say go for it, hopefully get it done by the end of the end of the summer before the rain gets cold. If I were to aim for a 100 miler I would procrastinate a bit longer and go for it next year, using this year to up my distances little by little.

EDIT: Im also a little over half your age!

If your knee is gipping you Pete make sure your bike is set up right and use a lower gear than you might normally choose, by that I mean spin your cranks nice and quick rather than trying to mash a big gear. This will put less stress on your knees mate. It works for me and my knees are proper knackered
