I don’t like the majority of offerings, which tend to be lumpy wankpanzers. I’d prefer to go for something that still resembles a normal car, such as a Vauxhall Corsa or a Renault Zoe.

Teslas are just fugly, and I would never buy one.

What's cheapest or best value on lease ?

It's always difficult to work out. At the moment I have available to me:-
  • 11 different models of Audi from £686 to £1123
  • 6 models of BMW from £532 to £877
  • 6 models of Citroen from the Ami to the e-space tourer (£197 to 607)
  • Cupra born and Cupra Tavascan (£387 to £508)
  • DS3 (£578)
  • 4 different Fiat 500s plus the 600e (£399 to £458
  • Jeep Avenger (£437)
  • 5 Mercs from £483 (Hatchback) to £981 (EQS Saloon)
  • 3 Minis from £340 to £455
  • Nissan Ariya and Leaf similarly prices (£412, and £419)
  • 8 Peugeots from the £441 hatchback to the e-traveller (£694)
  • Polestar 2 (£458) ,3 (£710), and 4 (£623)
  • Porsche Macana and Taycan from £887 to £1097
  • 3 Renaults (Scenic, Megane and Hatchback) from £330 to £393)
  • Skoda Enyaq and Elroq (£386 to £487)
  • VW ID3,4,5,7 and Buzz from £351 to £733
  • 5 Volvos from the Ex30 through to EX90 Estate (£438 to £1182)

All of the above are base price cost to me without extras. For example were I to choose the Skoda Enyaq Estate 2023 I then get a choice of:-
  • 210KW 84 Edition (£487)
  • 210KW 84 Edition [Suite] £498
  • 210KW 85 Edition [Advanced] £507
  • 210KW 85 Edition [Suite / Advanced] £519
  • 210KW 85 Edition [Maxx] £527
  • 210KW 85 Sportline Plus 4x4 £530
  • 210KW 85 Edition [Suite / Maxx] £539
  • 210KW 85x Sportline Plus [Adv] £552
  • 210KW 85x Sportline Plus [Maxx] £569
Nice and straightforward...

Annoyingly my company still won't let us have Hyundai, Kia or Tesla.
Of course I may not go with a lease through the company but take the money instead an go through somewhere like Octopus that seems to have some good deals.

The main thing for me is about the tech. I want electric seats that remember their position, the ability to check my car from the phone, in car tech and entertainment that works well, hi tech mirrors that give me better visibility, led array lighting that makes the road more visible. I want all the bells and whistles that you get in a Tesla for a similar price to a Tesla. Very few auto manufacturers seem to have cottoned on to that.

I don't just want an ICE car with a battery. That's the equivalent of taking a Bakelite phone, bunging a battery in and adding a smart screen.

BMW i4 is good if you want a saloon style EV. Really like mine and it is dripping with tech and you can control lots of functions direct from the app.

the VW ID7 gets good reviews and has excellent range but not sure about the tech

I know it’s personal tatste but I wouldn’t go anywhere near a Tesla. Neither their looks, lack of normal controls or Elon himself appeal!

That's really nice. I am biased though, my 330D GT is by a long way the best car I've ever owned (8 years now). Not looking for a replacement right now but if I was that would be top of the list.

Once I had decided to go to an EV (personal purchase and not a company car) I looked at so many and test drove lots. The BMW fitted the bill for me and is a happy marriage of technology, EV and ‘normal’ looking car as I didn’t want an SUV.
It drives very well although moving from my Quattro Audi to a RWD took a little getting used to !

I do like that fastback/coupe shape. How is the practicality, boot size/shape? I can get an XL frame road bike in the back of mine with the rear seats down without removing wheels.

As you know I’m a little (well, quite a bit!) shorter than you and I can get my bike in with seats down the same as I used to in my old car. Like all these things it took a dry run and a system to check!

We’ve had several Hyundai EVs make the news around here lately, seems the batteries last just slightly longer than the warranty and then cost 40 to 50 grand Canadian to replace.

I’m holding off a bit on EVs. Sodium based batteries on coming up soon. These lack the energy density of lithium batteries at this point but are safer by a mile as they can take huge damage without risk of fire. Also, Toyota has announced an IC drivetrain that they say is more environmentally friendly than electric. So give it five more years or you may need a lithium replacement after they are obsolete.

didn’t anybody learn from 8 track, laser or minidisc?

Sounds good but I'll need a car at the end of 2026 regardless and I have no intention of returning to the inconvenience of ICE

Toyota are so far behind in the market that they are desperate.

Yes. EV takeup is huge and infrastructure is good. EVs aren't going anywhere. The battery tech is likely to improve though.

A better comparision might be Betamax (vs VHS) or HD-DVD (vs Blu Ray) were both were trying to replace the existing tech but failed. EVs aren't going to do that.

Exactly though I can't afford an EV this go around for my next car, Petrol-Hybrid is my compromise if I can get one.
