Sadly I wrote it off on a sheep! It was good while it lasted. So was the sheep I suppose.

Yes, journeys used to take forever in those days. My dad used to make us set off in the early hours from London to North Somerset for our holidays in the family Standard 10. We arrived about late afternoon. My Dad also had one of these beauties

as he was a plumber and it was convenient for all his tools. Every summer we used to go to Cornwall in it, all the way from North Lancs. Overnight so as to miss the worst of the traffic but it still took 10 hours or so. My sister and I were in the back on a mattress so we had a jolly nice sleep and were ready to rock when Mum and Dad got to Newquay after driving all night

You're not wrong. From Leeds to Scarborough or Bridlington is about 65 miles - or about an hour in a modern car traffic permitting. In the 70s I can remember stopping just the other side of York "for a break" - and virtually every lay-by you passed would have a car stopped in it with the bonnet open...![]()
That was my first car too, it was an orange one and cost me £100. The painwork was pretty good but the underside was rusted to feck.
Growing up my dad had a Riley 2.5 litre.

Yep, primus stove for tea, boiled eggs with salt in the lay by![]()
I'd forgotten the delights of the lay-by luncheon - hard-boiled eggs or soggy cheese sandwiches, washed down with lukewarm tea...![]()
I came to motoring pretty late. My first car was a secondhand Fiat Panda, one of the original ones with "deckchair" seats which were surprisingly comfortable. It was great for nipping around town and seemed to be a red rag to a bull for boy racers. I once nipped in front of a champagne bucket exhaust hot hatch, which had the driver's girlfriend in the passenger seat. He went completely ape-sh*t. Happy days. View attachment 390392
