..depends on how close you want...and how much cash you have for this 'wonder' tone?

You should be able to get a reasonable impersonation from you current set up . Th espider amps have amp modelling...so find out what amps clapton used on that recording and use one as close to that as possible. Forget cranking the amp..it'll make no real difference on a tranny amp (except pushing the speaker cones)...which is cool for low volume stuff.

You'll be surprised what tones you can achieve with even basic equipment...spend some time tweaking and dont be afraid to experiment.

Failing that a good tube combo cranked loud will probably do the trick...just warn the neighbours. These are not cheap though....unless you are in a loud band you would be better off with a low wattage tube amp and push it HARD...

How many guitars does everyone have ? including my very first one from16 years ago I have 5. 2 classicals ,1 steel string ibanez electro acoustic , a squire strat thats in bits with most of the paint sanded off it and a prs se custom which is just awesome..mmmmm

At last count I had:
a Moondog Grand Master acoustic
a 1960s Teisco Lynx
a 1960s Teisco Del Rey semi acoustic
a 1979 Fender Strat
a 1970 Top Twenty (made by Teisco)
a 1960s single pickup Kay
a 1960s Zenta SG copy (with wonderful microphonic pickups)
a Squier Fat Telecaster
an electric mandolin

I play them through a 40 watt Fender Hot Rod, which is an all valve combo, usually with the drive turned up to about half and through a Z Vex Super Hard On preamp pedal. I rarely use the Strat or the Tele though, having been entirely seduced by the cheapandnasty Woolworth's Teiscos and Kays, largely because no one else plays them and they sound fantastic. And you can get them for less than the cost of a 1960s Fender switch.

Electric guitars can enhance your childs career prospects if you get them a decent teacher, let them do music GCSE, and even pay for them to go to one of those new music schools.

Let them learn satriani and gary moore... but let them forget it, in the same way that the karate kid had to paint fences.

Then they will go back to the the beginning and understand proper guitar playing like coldplay and the smiths.

..the smiths!!!! shoot i had forgotten about them....THE shitest band ever...with the exception of oasis

There is scientifically proved dissononce however, between people who think that the smiths are the shittest band ever and the fact that johnny marr is in the top handful of guitarists ever.

the smiths shoot on satriani. A big horseshoe shaped shoot done by all of the smiths in one incredible push right on to the chest of satriani during his uneasy sleep.

Johnny Marr is an excellent guitarist, although The Smiths were never really my thing.

You need to give them time. One of the problems with their music was that it was so different it jarred. Once you've understood it though it's very clever stuff, although Morrisey is still a tosser! ;0)

Not much to add to what's been said, another vote for the Ibanez low end range, great instruments for the money.
Whoever it was talking about the Line 6 Spider, not worth it, Vox AD series is much better, but in general if you can afford to wait just save and get a decent tube amp like a Peavey Valveking (1x12 version £279 on GAK.co.uk)

Also djtheglove, if you need a guitar teacher, I live in Clapham (and am a student so cheap ) so might be able to help you out
