I forgot to mention that Jelly Babies are good for a little hit of energy. I always have a packet in my handlebar bag when I'm on a tour.

hi
I would advise cycling every other day - or not two days in a row , it gives your body a day too detox,
a good energy food is yogurt covered flap jacks - moist and bulky
I tend to drink before the ride 1/2pint min. to help stop in ride dehydration , I don,t carry much water , its uk you can normally scrounge a pint of water from a pub.
build up distance slowly , nothing worse than having gone to far out and struggling back (I,ve done that)

don,t cycle if your not feeling well - enjoy it.

Only at the end, I have found even 1 pint during a ride can really bugger you(or me actually) up from a cycling point of view.
I don,t know why, maybe the alcohol hits the body to quick - or its just my metabolism , I can't handle alcohol - but I find it takes the edge of my riding.

of course theres nothing better than a 'victory' pint at the end.
