Not very good with stuff like this, a typical day with a 6 mile ride what would a good days food be.

Thanks again for the replies

I do know where I'm going wrong with my diet (I think!!!) It's just hard for me to find the motivation to do it. Probably to laid back for my own good.

Back to cycling though, gonna try a 10 again this afternoon and see how it goes.

6 miles is probably nothing more than an extra slice of bread. Seriously! About 200 calories will cover a ride of this length.

I used to do 6-10 miles as my hardcore pre-ski-ing work-out. Then I got serious. 150 miles with 4,000m of climbing was a bit tough, but the 100 miles with a cat 4 hill was fun. Anything less than 30 is now a quick spin.

Try going out with friends, joining a group or a ride. I used to got out far too hard for a long ride. Problem is that when you are on your own you are only thinking about getting round, and you ride too hard. With friends or a group you can chat, moderate your pace, and achieve 5 times your normal ride without apparently working any harder. 10% less effort over 5 x distance = 4.5 x the energy expended.

Cheers brumjim,

Last paragraph sums it up a lot for me. On my own I'm constantly thinking about hills and they've probably beat me before I have started the climb. I have looked at joining a group but the one nearest to where I live recommend you do a 30 mile ride before you join, I am way off that at the moment.

If your craving chocolate its because your body is craving the fat content because its ran out of carbohydrates

eat some porrige in morning or have some pasta about an hour before you go on a ride , if you are cycling for two hours then you should be eating approx 45 mins to an hour into the ride bananas or flapjacks are good remember to drink a lot even if your cold you can still dehydrate so get something like zero tablets to disolve in a water bottle and as others have said slowly increase your milage and you will feel the benefits in a couple of weeks

Take a long hard look at what you eat before stuffing yourself full of cake. Hard to tell if that advice was humor or serious.

At least 1 thing is wrong: Too big an increase in distance compared to your level of fitness.

And probably diet.
Of course cake should only be taken as a treat, but when i've been good all week what's a fella to do at the weekend when there's so many tearooms and cafes selling delishas caek?

Try CTC, Skyride, Group Rides here on CC. Skyride in particular caters for those right at the bottom end of getting back on a bike.

Cheers for the replies Ian and Jim, really helpful.

Is there tips on group riding as I've never done this before and would like to look into it before jumping in at the deep end. I presume most groups welcome new comers but I wouldn't want to get in the way/spoil the ride

Yeah been told about the bananas, also read a few recipes for the flapjack too. On a 10-15 mile ride though is there any need for fuel stops ie flapjack
