I'm new to cycling and only really do a few 5 mile circuits each week to keep fit. However when I do a 10-15 mile ride the next day I feel really run down with no energy. Is this normal at first or am I doing something wrong??

Perfectly normal as mentioned you're new to the game and takes a while to build up fitness. Being bike fit is completely different to other sports fitness so will take a while for your body to get used to it, give it a few more weeks and you'll be flying.

Keep at your 5 mile runs and increase your mileage very slowly over a month or two and you'll be OK. It's not unusual to feel worn out and/or hungry after a longer run. This time next year you'll be doing 15 miles without even noticing it and longer runs too.

I ride 3 or 4 times a week, and my shortest loop from home is 17miles. I missed 5 weeks due to snow twice in the last two years and each time was ravenous after my first rides out. This lasted a week or so before I went back to normal. I normally can ride all day without adjusting my daily calorie intake.

try a large slice of chocolate cake, with a cup of tea during a cafe stop on a ride. works for me ^_^

sounds good to me too!!!

Thanks for the info, hopefully with a little determination I'll come through flying

Take a long hard look at what you eat before stuffing yourself full of cake. Hard to tell if that advice was humor or serious.

At least 1 thing is wrong: Too big an increase in distance compared to your level of fitness.

And probably diet.

Being able to eat and drink pretty much anything is a big bonus to cycling or any exercise. Some of the people I work with think I must have a very fast metabolism.

Personally I don't think it is any faster then average. I just know what exercise is.

When I got back on the bike after nearly 20 years. It took me 7 minutes to ride a mile and a half and half an hour to recover. It takes time getting your body used to exercise.

I think you may be right on the increasing part as I'd had a long week at work and possibly pushed too far. Thanks for the reply

When I was young I was quite fit but a few years on and kids arriving to the family I found it hard to make time for exercise but starting a new job soon which isn't working away from home so I'm determined to get back in shape and feel good about myself. After Xmas I may look in to commuting as its only 6 mile round trip

Sorry, forgot to ask have you any tips on diet for a cyclist during the week?
