is Mont Blanc walkable, or do you have to swing around on ropes?

There is no 'swinging around on ropes' on any of the normal routes, if by that you mean roped rock or ice climbing. Crampons and an axe are essential and even on the easiest way up, the Dome de Gouter, there are places where it would be sensible to rope up i.e. walk as a string of two or three.

MB is like a lot of mountains, relatively straightforward in good conditions if you have the right equipment - but becoming life threatening in minutes if the weather changes or someone gets injured.

It's because the Earth isn't a perfect orb but it's a slightly spurious claim to fame as it's not even the highest peak in the Andes!
I wouldn't say it's a spurious claim - it really is the furthest from the centre and nowhere else can make that claim.

My chances of getting to the top of anything in the Himalaya has always been small and for at least 20 years has been nil.

The highest I've been on a bike is touring in the Himalayas - 17582 feet / 5359m.
I swore never to repeat it but recently there's been a little voice in my head saying it'd be fun to try and go higher...!

When you say "centre", do you mean geoidal or gravitational?
Geoidal. Any difference between that and the gravitational centre doesn't affect this particular calculation - Chimborazo is still the furthest.

[So says Uncle Google. I'm an unemployed lawyer, not a planetary geometer, you can't expect me to know this stuff.]

3,883 m. Zermatt - Matterhorn glacier paradise.

Walked out of the lift, and headed up the tunnel towards the slope. Felt very unfit and out of breath. Then realised that it was just the altitude.

No, you're right. Not spurious - bad choice of words!

Meaningless when starting the climb from the surface, I meant:biggrin:
