When I commuted it was Pop-Tarts and coffee for the win. Now I do not commute, as Mrs. GA frets it so.

When I commute (similar distance) eating beforehand makes a lot of difference to how I feel.
If I did my training ride on an empty stomach, I'd go hypo before I got half way up the hill, but then I am a T2 diabetic.

6 Mile commute. Bowl of muesli and some fruit before leaving and an orange when get in. (Couldn't leave without anything to eat)
Commute time depends on wind speed and direction.
Then watch my motorist colleagues (some of them drive shorter distances than I cycle) woof down breakfast rolls.

I have weetabix before setting off on my 5mile (all uphill) journey at about 7.15. It often makes me feel a bit sick.
I would prefer to cycle on an empty stomach and eat when I get to work but there is nowhere to eat and work is pretty full on - I am bombarded with stuff to do the moment I land - not very relaxing for eating breakfast!

I commuted 12 miles each way and then 16 miles each way for a different job. Breakfast was the same if I was at home, riding to work or driving to work. In my case some cereal, usually a Weetabix or similar with a cut up piece of fresh fruit and semi-skimmed milk with a large mug or two of tea. If you're feeling drained after only 6 miles each way I'd suggest riding less hard at the start of the working week and really go for it on Friday.

My short commute is the same, six miles, and I don't bother with breakfast til I get to work (on earlies this is) Sometimes I don't even get a chance to eat until I've cycled home ten hours later too - depends how busy the day is. I feel irritable and hungry when I don't get the chance to eat at work, but the cycle home is still never an issue.

For that distance I would have a bowl of cereal/porridge with some dried cranberries and honey. I would then have a banana or some other fruit when I get to work. For the ride home a cereal bar or a cake an hour or so before leaving should get you home no problem.

I used to ride on an empty stomach (10 mile commute) I was okay but did find I was lacking, I'm now having a small bowl of either cereal or portage and its made a big difference to how I feel I have much more energy. I even eat it 5mins before I leave with no problems.
From personal experience its definitely better to have something before you set off.

Getting bike-fit won't make any difference. It will just mean you'll get there faster, but be just as knackered . I'm with those who have breakfast on arriving at work. Right now, I'm having a bowl of yoghurt and muesli with my 1st coffee of the day.

Got to work the Parish Book Sale Saturday, porridge to get me there, baked goods on offer once I am there. In previous sales I found a copy of Jobst Brandts The Bicycle Wheel as well as many other cycling books. Most of my work with this involves notifying and chatting with book collectors I know.

10 mile morning commute in and I don't have anything to eat until lunch which is a cup of chicken rice soup, and a tuna mayo and red onion roll. Then cycle home the same way after work.

I start the day with a substantial bowl of porridge at about 0515 hrs and am on the road at 0600 hrs for a 20 Km ride to work, its a routine I've been doing for quite a wile and it seems to suit me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
