Something easy to ride (no fatso tyres) on all surfaces, simple too, a fixed fork Hybrid with 32mm tyres would be my choice. I got serious on one of these and being able to hop from road to trail whenever I felt like it was a great advantage. My choices:-

Dawes Discovery - Specialized Sirrus - Trek FX, all good bikes that will provide a good amount of fun and versatility for not much money. Easy to sell on too.

I'd go with the Sirrus as well - I'd certainly not choose fat knobbly tyres if you want to spend any time at all on the road.

hello all I am new to this forum,i am 50 years old and haven't been on a bike for years I am training in muay thai and would like a bike to help with my cardio and help build strength and in endurance in my legs.what do you suggest, thank you

Hi skyair

I have just started cycling for the same reason (well similar - I train at karate and just qualified for a worlds) and also have a knee injury to deal with.

I bought a trek fx 7.3 and it is great. Good cardio work and my knee doesn't complain at all.

Good luck, hope the training continues to go well oos !

Lol you can call me oos but that's just a martial arts thing you might remember it from your karate days
I do run as well and find it ok but a bit boring. I work three miles from home which at the pace I run would take about half an hour running but apparently only about half that cycling hence the interest.
I snapped my cruciate ligament some years ago and I find a break from training makes me knee sore. Broke my big toe a couple of months back and had to rest for a week and yes the knee is playing up now. I've been told by a physio that my quads are very tight which compounds the problem, but 20 years of horse stance does that to you
I was working in Thailand in 2010 and go invited to some Thai fights. They are a world apart from anything I had ever seen before and I'm sure you will find it fascinating, definitely worth a look.
Always happy to talk to a fellow martial artist. Oos - Mel

yes I remember lol,the running has become an issue for me[to much kicking heavy bags over the years]started off with karate and then boxing then kickboxing then stopped when I was 33,spend a lot of time in Thailand[my wife is thai] but we live in uk but go on extended holidays when we can, last year did a bit of muay thai and got hooked again[you know us fighters cant stop] so will be 6 weeks in muay thai camp in new year and I want to be as fit as I can,oos where did you work in Thailand?

I worked in Bangkok for eight weeks for exxonmobil. It was perfectly timed, just when the rioting was happening
Yes martial arts is addictive. I had to stop for a bit when I was diagnosed as t1 diabetic but thanks to Steve Redgrave I'm back on it and back to winning titles
I cannot imagine life without karate. I'm hoping cycling will tap into that a bit and replace the motorcycling bug I had before I sold the moto (to fund the trip to the worlds booo)
If you've seen the fighting out in Thailand then you know what I mean about it being poles apart from us. No protective gear and full contact.
