Came to fit the 'original' wheels I had for the CX bike as they have road tyres on (planning a lumpy road ride). Loads of play in rear wheel. I'd just replaced the bearings recently. Turns out the bearings are absolute crap - too much play in them - might be ok for non critical use, but not in a wheel. Oh well a couple of FAG 6001's ordered from Wych !

6001RS, but cheap ones. Don't usually, but they were a spare wheelset. Lateral play from new, all 4 are like that.

What do you mean all 4, you usually have 9 ball bearings either side rear, and 10 either side front?

All four cartridge bearings had lateral play, not ball bearings.

Not as such - you can nip everything tight, but if there is play in a cartridge (which only happens when worn) no way. Nothing lost, but I was expecting slightly better tollerances. I usually don't go cheapish, usually Enduro/SKF/ or a mid range Japanese make etc but it was a spare wheelset I was refurbing and not using much. Easy enough to change them, but no way of getting rid of the play.

Yesterday my drive train and transmission made it clear in a manner hard to ignore, that I really should have cleaned and oiled them more often and I should have especially done this before a 75k cycle ride, so this morning before work started properly, I gave everything a clean and oiled everything.
I think I've bent the derailleur though; the gears are jumping at the extremes and although the hanger is straight it still looks a bit off, so I'll have a dig through the approximately 438 mechs in the store to find one that's similar.

Stripped and regreased the front hub yesterday as it was rough as a badgers arse despite being brand new.
Swapped my normal flat bars out for the original wider riser bars for more control and because I so love twatting my rear view mirror on things.

Next job, new jockey's for the commuter. The BBB lower jockey's cartridge bearing is worn out - loads of pay - new ones arrive today. Job for this evening after bike ride and dad taxi duties.

Jockey wheels and bearings turned up whilst I was out cycing, so, all fixed and the CX got washed - very dusty out.
