Gave the Tricross a fettle this morning.
New Conti GP5000 700 x 28 rear tyre as the other had worn through.
New Ritchey bar tape. The first time I’ve double wrapped (over the old), the tape was only just long enough, feels very comfortable.
A quick clean and lube ready for the weekend.

I’m the second owner of this bike and have ridden it a total of 10,649 miles, it’s 13 years old now and still looks pretty good. 👍

As long as I breathe, I attack.
this weekends job will be to strip the freehub on the commuter again
wednesday on the way to work it was frosty and after a couple of days of really wet weather it seized again after about 9 miles , luckily i was near enough to work to walk the last bit and it defrosted enough for the homeward trip but thats the second time its done it under similar conditions .
Might strip the one of the spare wheel with broken rim and see if that fits as its the same branded wheel for the bike as that one never had the same issues .
When i get more time i am going to do a full degrease and lube

Discovery #1: IS-to-PM disc brake adapters are not the same size front and rear! I bought one for a 160 mm disc and found that it would not allow me to fit the calliper to a 160 mm rear disc. It turns out to be for a 160 mm FRONT disc. I think it would be good for a 140 mm REAR disc. I now have a 160 mm REAR adapter on order!

Discovery #2: Old thumb shifters can get gunged up. The 20 year rear shifter on the MTB that I am fettling had become extremely unreliable. I was about to take the cover off it when I found this video on YouTube...

I did what was suggested, but used GT85. Instant success! I left the surplus lube dripping out onto newspaper overnight. The shifter works really well now.

Once I finish my coffee, I am going back to the bike to check its chain length. I'm hoping that it is too long because I would like to remove 1 or 2 pairs of links.

Done...

The chain WAS a pair of links too long, so I chopped them out and the sloppy slack in the chain has now gone.

It is not good enough to double-check that you correctly rethread the chain through the rear derailleur to avoid the novice's mistake of threading it round that tab thingy. Only checking twice means that you can make the experienced mechanic's mistake of threading the chain round that tab thingy. I'll let you work out how I know this...

At least with quick links you don’t need to break the chain you’ve just joined.

Indeed!

I have been waiting until everything else has been sorted before lubing the chain, since I am not yet using wax and always seem to end up covered in oil.

You should try a recumbent chain. Firstly I need 3 quick links. Then as well as the derailleurs there are 3 idlers on mine I need to thread through. Thus 5 areas I may potentially not thread it properly.
