Today at home started properly stripping the All-City down for parts to transfer to the new Fairlight ;some di2 cables and fittings, seat post with di2 battery, cranks, bb and rear mech.

All will be cleaned up tomorrow at work (can clean some bits in the parts washer quicker than at home).

Replaced the freehub on the vanquish which was a surprisingly easy job then gave the bike a baby wipe clean as im not trying to wash it outside in the dark whilst its sub zero ;)
Then i took a look at the bike gifted by @IanSmithCSE a carrera tdf with alloy fork and 7 speed freewheel
Basically sound and rideable so i set up the saddle height and setback but that perch is going in the bin as its a torture device and the seat post is one of those single pin jobbies that i despise as i can never get them level.
The 7 speed freewheel indexes well but the high range easy gear is really to big for the derailleur to handle so you cant get the 2 easiest gears in the big ring.
Not sure whether to just replace the wheels with something i have knocking around and get a 7 speed cassette to match the shifters or go the whole hog and upgrade the groupset .I do have a tiagra 4700 but i think thats overkill and was toying with some of those cheap ones you see on ali express as i can 8 speed ones for around £30-40
The front gearing is an odd combo of 46/36 , i know i have a 34s in the shed but not sure if i have a 50 knocking about without looking and its too flipping nippy to look atm .
Replaced the adjustable stem with a 90 mm standard one to give me my usual reach set up .
Ripped the bottle cages off as each one had a stuck bolt on the lower hole which i managed to get out with a long handled pipe wrench .
Mudgaurds are very nice and im considering taking them off and using them on my usual commuter as the ones i have atm are about ready to be binned.
All in all i happy with the bike and im in a connumdrum as to whether to spend a little on it to make it a summer commuter or just us as is on the turbo .

Good morning,

I had to smile as I read this, as you seem to have ended up at the same place I did.

The previous owner appears to have set it up to be ideal for his needs and as a result it was all just a bit too "off" for me and so much needed changing to make it more "normal".

Bye

Ian

luckily i have a shed full of bits and bobs , the saddle height and reach must have been set for a stumpy legged long armed rider !

was in two pieces! I have never seen this before. Replaced with a new one.

Has anyone else had this trouble? It was only sixty years old!

yep me too ..drive side as yours is ...replaced by a solid axle ..bent the skewer too cant find the bit for a picture but am sure i saved the part for old times sake

@cyberknight i’ve got the Sensah 8 speed reflex shifters. Operate just like SRAM, have internal cable routing. On the front shifter though it has 4 clicks for trim. 2 on small and 2 on high.

They work flawlessly, I dare say better than genuine Claris R2000’s. I didn’t fancy the L-TWOO 8 speed as Trace Velo has had some bad experiences and I’d say they are very much a work in progress with quality.

im undecided , if its for the turbo i will probably just change the freewheel to a normal range and i have chainrings in spares
