You can still get beer for 99p in Wetherspoons. My take on prices is that most stuff costs less to buy but more to run. Houses being the major exception. Compared to the '70's and '80's for example, Tv's and electricals are much cheaper than they were (relative to salaries), decent used cars were cheaper until recently, foreign holidays are cheaper. What costs more is the running costs like petrol, utilities, car insurance, travel insurance etc.

I think you are right and there is just so much more we "need" to have.

Camper vans
Gravel bikes
Multiple cars per household
Resin driveways
Multiple televisions
Deliveroo.
Conservatories
Wine/beer with every meal
Big meals
Fast food.

I'm staying in the 1970s!

I think what is considered vital these days is different. As above none of the above post are do or die items, they are because you can items. The must have consumer culture is rampant and people seem to be willing to go in to extraordinary debt to have the latest TV/car/phone snd consider themselves hard done by if they can't have it.

A piece of advice my Mum gave me before I got married (1968)....if you can't afford furniture then get some orange boxes to sit on. Do not go into debt.
That principle stayed with me all my life.

the way things are going power cuts and 3 day weeks may return!
As said above whats folk consider essential has changed , how would most of the "softies" today cope with ice on the inside of the windows ,carrying shopping miles as you couldnt afford the bus let alone a car and hand me down clothing .

Younger ones in their 30's, 40', even 50's think I exaggerate when I tell them about the 'leccy' going off for hours on end and having to move round the house in the winter months with the aid of a flickering candle.

Our Dentist Surgery have decided they're knocking NHS patients on the head (more money in teeth straightening), 6000 of us struck off the books including me and my family.

We're looking at monthly plans now, not cheap at all..

Brutal. Same thing happened to me about 15 years ago. I was lucky that I found another NHS dentist to attend. How much longer that will last, I am not sure......

What about people on benefits........do they get free treatment ??
It wouldn't be so bad if the gov stopped taking nhs out of your wages every week.
