Snow White - 6.5/10

Genuinely don't get the flack this is getting.

It's not the worst of the Disney live action remakes (take a bow, Dumbo) or the best (Aladdin), some of the new songs are very shonky, especially "Princess Problem" which sounds inescapably like "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas", and it's not as dark as the original but it's a perfectly fun way to spend a couple of hours.

My 9 year old said,

"Wow that felt like it was only 15 minutes long!"

Which I guess proves the Disney magic is still a thing.

I reckon it's a cunning advertising campaign by the publishers. It's certainly getting them plenty of hype and publicity.

I had more of a look into it because I was interested, especially because it's got 1.5/10 on IMDB. It's very much a NCAP conversation, but it's basically rooted in racism and Zionism.

The irony is that most of the ire has been directed at Rachel Zegler without whom the film really would deserve a kicking.

Karate Kid - 8/10

First time for me, somehow, and it's one of those which everyone tells me I should watch but I've never got round to it, mostly because in my experience they never live up to the hype.

Fortunately this didn't disappoint. Knowing a bit of the history I was expecting it to be Rocky for kids, and it pretty much is but that's not a bad thing, especially when then chemistry between the leads is so strong.

And I finally get a whole bunch of cultural references which had totally passed me by before.

It's also because they have spent a ton of money to make a pretty mediocre film whilst tying themselves in knots about trying not to offend anyone. The major problem is that the source material is very old and by modern standards pretty poor. All the characters in the original film are cardboard cutouts and the modern audience needs more than that.

I loved it back in the day, but on my second viewing I realised that Danny is the one provoking the 'bullies' from the outset and instead of teaching him karate, Mr Miyagi should have told him to stop being such a little ****

Fun Fact: the winning kick at the tournament would have got Danny disqualified in real life.

The following films get worse and worse... but then we got Cobra Kai, which is excellent.

Gal Gadot is getting plenty of stick for her acting, was she that bad?
Not a film I intend to watch but Rachel Zegler does seem a talented actress/singer and was probably right when she said the original was dated etc but not the wisest move to bash the original. I’m sure it’s fine for it’s target audience.

Also how does Gal Gadot get a star in the Hollywood walk of fame? 🧐

How had you not watched this!? Obviously not an 80’s kid.

She's not bad, but the character just isn't evil enough.

I was born in '85. It's just never a film which has interested me before.

Too young. You'd really have to be a 70's kid (at latest) to fully appreciate a film made in 1984. Imo, unless it happens to timeless for whatever reason. Karate Kid was definitely of it's time.
