Ghost Ship on MTV last night. Stumbled across this whilst idly channel hopping. A mild horror/ghost story set aboard a cruise liner lost in the ‘60s and rediscovered afloat decades later. What appears to be a salvage bonanza soon turns out to be something entirely different. Was watchable in a so-bad-it’s-good kind of way.

The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide

I didn't make it to the end of CT, Gene Hackman's character is a lot more annoying than I remember. He does have a cute dog though. THFRO though is great, Sean Connery is a powerhouse in this and Sam Neill plays great against him.

Might watch Das Boot tonight ^_^

Dune (again) (latest 2021 version). I like all the versions but the latest is the best and I can watch more than once.

The Blood on Satan's Claw.

Another old gem for me, it's thought of as a classic amongst fans of British horror but for the first half hour it's a bit dull, after that though it gets going properly and earns the classic status.

A tale of witchcraft and weirdness set in the 17th century, no big names such as Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee in it but it's definitely worth a watch.

7/10.

Countess Dracula.

I remember watching this many years ago with the lovely Ingrid Pitt in the title role of this Hammer production, and now that I'm slightly older it's every bit as good as the first time I watched it, I think I need a cold shower now. 😂

8/10.

Empire of Light staring Olivia Colman as a lady who has her ups and downs of mental illness working in a rather faded glory art deco cinema in Brighton in the 80s who has a love affair with (Michael Ward) a young black lad she works with, against the backdrop of the time and place. Top supporting cast include Toby Jones (superb as ever) playing the grumpy but quite kindly projectionist, Colin Firth as their manager. Superb chemistry between the leads making their age-gap relationship seem quite realistic. Funny, and in turn both sad and uplifting. The film is beautifully filmed, particularly the art deco cinema, and I love seeing the 80s era cars casually in the background for us geeks, the acting is all top notch, and Olivia in particular is astonishingly good. I'm a huge fan of her performances in everything I've seen her in but this is something else again and Oscar worthy, albeit maybe it's not kind of film that wins Oscars despite its merit. No great moralising, eg there's racism but it's not the main theme, just a slice of life, time and place, with real seeming people looking out for each other.

I liked it a lot

If you're still on a submarine trip, can highly recommend The Enemy Below.

Oh, and U571. Bon Jovi is in it. Which says enough really, but it's an entirely laughable retelling of how the Enigma code was cracked, predictably enough by the Americans.

Concur about "enemy below"; Robert Mitchum as the destroyer captain vs Kurt Jurguns in the sub. It's an excellent film

It was also remade as a rather good Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror" with Kirk in the Enterprise up against a single Romulan ship, with the "cloaking device" being the equivalent of being underwater.

The Enemy Below I have been recomended before, the other older submarine one I want to get is Ice Station Zebra. So those are both this weekend (or sooner.

U571 I won't watch, absolute white washing of the story. A better fictional sub story is Grey Lady Down, a 70s disaster movie feel to it but I've enjoyed it before.

Aye, U571 is an absolute shocker. Genuinely laughable.

Run Silent, Run Deep is another good one.

I do love a submarine film. There's always a genuine sense of threat. I'm sure it's Enemy Below which has these incredible sound effects when they're going way, way too deep and the pressure is starting to take effect.
