American History X.

Disturbing, but not gratuitously so. Its all quite proportionate and necessary by the tale being told.

Clever use of monochrome footage to determine past events. Good, sensitive performances from a number of actors, including Elliot Gould.

8/10. Compelling, but not for the squeamish.

I watched an edited for TV version in the US once, and they'd totally cut the pivotal shower scene. Very odd.

For further Ed Norton in introspection mode, check out 25th Hour.

The hateful 8 was just too damn long @John the Monkey but that was a superb write up ..

Utter, utter dross.
There's a tiny grain of what could have been a decent film in there, but the plot, the script, and to a large extent the acting were terrible.

It's got 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, and that's incredibly generous.

It's supposed to be a comedy, but I don't think I laughed more than once.

0.5/10 and the half point is only because Vincent D'Onforio is in it

Agreed. I think Tarantino is an excellent film maker, but this isn't an excellent film... I'm not sure if it was even a 'good' film and it's one film i'm unlikely to sit through a second time. Maybe (like many films these days) it would have been a lot better if trimmed to a more palatable 90 minutes.

When I glanced at your post was I the only one to assume your were talking about American Werewolf in London?

Unbroken.

A semi true story. The special effects in the opening bomber scene don't work well on the small screen, the plot is paced too slowly and fails to keep attention. Various historic question marks - for example, they're the cleanest cut, best turned out Japanese P.O.W.s I've even seen on the screen.

5/10. Watch if you must, but its a bit of a drudge really.

Blackhawk Down

A salutory lesson in why politicians shouldn't tell soldiers how to do their job. I love the scene where Little Bird straff's the bad dudes with the twin M134's - lots of suddenly dead opposition!

Very gritty, great weapons and patrol drills, gripping stuff. 9/10.

The King of New York. Let me see now....bad guy gets out of prison, gets together with his old bad guy chums. They shoot a bunch of bad guys...shoot some more bad guys...shoot & get shot by more bad guys...the police get involved (not sure why - you'd think they'd be happy with all these bad guys shooting each other...maybe they just feel left out)...police shoot bad guys, bad guys shoot police, everybody shoots everybody else...bad guy gets shot. The End. Did I miss anything...um....nope, don't think so. 6/10 - that's generous, and pretty much all for Christopher Walken, who does quite a good cold-eyed psycho. I would have put a spoiler alert, but believe me, this is not the kind of fillum you can spoil.
