Starcrash - mid 70's attempt to cash in on the Star Wars popularity with Caroline Munro in skimpy bikini and half-way through The Hoff puts in an appearance.

Horrendous special effects, acting and dialogue mean it's quite good after a few pints and a HD copy is available FOC on youview.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High - felt like watching something a bit brainless and fun, and it gets a respectable 7.2 on IMDB, which is usually enough to ensure a happy couple of hours, but I was to be sadly disappointed. Flimsy, uninteresting, bereft of characters or even a decent one-liner or two. It started, went along for a bit, then stopped. What a let down. 5/10 - and that's only 'cos it's a nice sunny day & I'm feeling cheerful. (I'd previously tried something called American Honey, but gave up on that one when I realised after about 40 minutes that there was still two hours to go. Think I'll pass....)

As for me, I watched "Unfriended", which has just popped up on Netflix.
I'm surprised it hasn't received more attention, as it feels like it could be genre defining in the way that Blair Witch was. Essentially, a group of teens is tormented by a mysterious figure who seems to be extracting revenge for their bullying of a girl who committed suicide. The unique conceit here though, it that the action takes place in skype windows, facebook messages and youtube windows, all shown on the protagonist's screen - a screen we don't leave for the entirety of the film. That can be hard work at times (the text can seem painfully small!) It's well done, given the character's potential unlikeability, and the way the action takes place is something I've not seen done before. Well worth catching.

I was lucky enough to catch it at the cinema. Very cleverly made film which deserves more attention.

Will give it a second viewing tonight.

The Day After Tomorrow.

Utter hokum, but utterly delightful.

Dennis Quaid is great as the mad scientist that no one listened too until it was too late. Fantastic special effects. I always feel like switching the heating on when I watch it.

8/8 - suspend disbelief and enjoy watching the World as we know it coming to a chilly end.

John Wick (Prime Video)
Stylish, but ultimately slightly empty feeling revenge picture. Keanu Reeves (who is actually pretty good as the fairly blank character of Wick) plays a retired hitman who exacts a terrible revenge on the mobsters who cross him. There are echoes of Point Blank (in the remorseless dedication of the protagonist) and Equilibrium in the balletic action sequences. I felt like it needed something more hefty behind it though, or perhaps less. While Point Blank's Walker simply wants his money, Wick's motivations, and sorrow seem at odds with the death toll he causes himself.

Baskin (Recorded from Film 4)
Gory Turkish horror. A group of policemen answer a call for backup, and encounter a bizarre cult. I couldn't help feeling that there's some cultural resonances that I was missing here, that might have made the film mean more. As it is, the use of flashbacks, and deliberate playing with the timeline are interesting, but I kept thinking about Bone Tomahawk while watching, and wishing that the film had built up the sort of rapport between the characters that Bone Tomahawk had done before the gore. As it is, the shocks, whilst they feel earned and not gratuitous, don't carry much weight beyond their grotesque sadism.

Last Tango in Paris - believe the hype. Immense, intense, Brando is spellbinding.
Annie Hall - probably my favourite Woody Allen: tremendously evocative of a time & place and packed with great lines. And performances.
Manchester by the Sea - gripping, powerful, I can't think of another film so deeply suffused with melancholy, and love in its infinite variety.

2 Guns.

Denzel Washington playing, well, playing Denzel Washington like he always does. Mark Wahlberg grunting and flexing his arms at every opportunity. The basic premises of two cops from different organisations working undercover on the same job and being unaware of each others existence is OK, but the plot is overly complex and staggers drunkenly between thriller and light comedy.

Dreadful weapons drills.

4/10. I'm generous with the score because it was quite an imaginative method for robbing a bank without being caught.

Hell or High Water (Prime Video)
Impressive modern Western setting it's narrative in the depressed, debt ridden areas of West Texas. At its heart, it pits aging lawman Jeff Bridges against a pair of bank robbers - but weaves in themes of the mythology of the west butting up against cruel realities, of the characters getting out of their depth before they realise just how deep they are, and of corporate amorality set against people doing the wrong thing for arguably the right reasons. There are weapons in it, but none of them are drills.

It's good, and you can see it at no extra charge if you have Amazon prime.

The Haunting in Conneticut (Recorded from Film 4)
Middling supernatural horror with some decent jump scares and the occasional striking visual. Having just seen Baskin, the body horror shocks didn't really shock here, and it's fairly standard "terrible things have happened in this house" fare. The cast are decent, and do their best with the material, but you've seen this story before, largely.

Blitz.

More of a thriller and less of an action romp than Jason Statham usually has, although there are still plenty of cracked skulls. A decent plot with a clever twist at the end. The scene where he catches some Herbert's trying to steal his car is very violent, and quite amusing.

Best quote - " Hurling - its a cross between Hockey, and murder."

Surprisingly good watch. 7/10.

Jeremy Saulnier directed revenge picture, modifying the old proverb from "If you begin a journey of revenge, first dig two graves" to "...dig a sh*tload of graves."

The film follows the ramifications of a single act of violence, and as it goes on, we discover that there is no clear beginning, or end to the cycle for the characters involved. Brutal and gripping, and it occurs to me that the degree of moral complexity here is one of the things that was missing from John Wick, at least for me as a viewer. Well worth seeing, but a bit gruelling, both in terms of the unflinching visuals, and the emotional toll the acts of violence take.

We watched this last night, really enjoyed it, the four main actors were excellent, Chris Pine was very good. And not only was it good from an acting and dialogue point of view, visually it was really nice to look at. A recent stand out film for me in a sea of mediocrity.

Yeah but what about the weapons drills, the Stathe usually likes a shooter?
