High Plains Drifter (Netflix)

Time has not been kind to the film's attitude to women. I think the film still holds up, but it's best seen as part of the progression towards Eastwood's later work in the Western genre.

The Quiet Ones (recorded from Film4)

Middling horror business. Can't seem to decide whether its a straightforward narrative or a found footage film, and relies more on a sense of dread than outright scares, mostly. Entertaining enough.

Ender's Game (recorded)

Insufferable child works with sociopathic military commander to save earth from a possible invasion. Bad things happen, but its ok because the protagonist feels bad about them. Ben Kingsley is a Maori. Betrays its origins as a 3D thrillfest in several shots in which the camera zooms through objects in space. Visually spectacular, but difficult to give too much of a monkeys about the main characters.

It's not the only one of those early Eastwoods to appear staggeringly misogynistic, from the enlightened viewpoint of the 21st century. I wonder how he feels about them now (and did then) - he doesn't come across as a lunkhead, for all the adeptly-exploited iconography of his early career.

I couldn't get into it, it looked like they were way overacting.

Me either. As I posted on a short-lived 'Classic Movies' thread hereabouts a couple of months back:

"Have to say I watched the Maltese Falcon recently too, and was amazed how crap it was. Really clunky, and tho' the villainous villains are quite villainous, in a rather pantomime sort of way, the central romance that supposedly drives the whole thing is as flat as piss on a plate. The woman by whom our Humph is so supposedly smitten has all the charisma and sexual allure of a donor kebab."

The Martian.

We are going to science the shoot out of everything except the 'fly like Iron Man' capture sequence.

10 Cloverfield Lane. A film that tried to stride between two genres and fell down the gap in the middle.

Bad words. It's directed by and stars Jason Bateman and is about a 40 year-old man who for a curious reason only divulged late into the film, uses a loophole in the rules to enable him to enter and compete in a Spelling Bee competition. As you might imagine, he comes in for some righteous abuse from the child competitors' parents!

It's quite good. 6/10

Montana...on NowTV package.
Streetwise and cocky drug running teenager in London is given a death sentence by his Serbian drug lords..is saved by chance by an ex Serbain commando seeking revenge for his families brutal murder.
Brutal best describes it, some almost comical psychopathic characters, mayhem, murder, bent cops, revenge, the lot.
Very much in the 'Leon' style...equally as good.

Transformers: Age of Extinction

I don't know why. I knew it was going to be shite, and it was.
Utterly inexplicable and implausible plot. Dreadful dialogue. Dull action scenes. Characters so two-dimensional they make Road Runner look nuanced and complex. And 2h45m!!
Stanley Tucci displays the only half-decent acting and does his best with the execrable material; he just manages to scrape the score up to 2/10, and I think I'm being generous!

And somehow this travesty took over a billion dollars at the box office!
