Shogun Assassin

Very stylised, almost psychedelic martial arts film. A surprisingly chunky hero battles huge numbers of ninjas, dispatching them in great gouts of cartoonishly crimson blood. You know the assailants are ninjas because they either announce themselves as such, or the voiceover (delivered by the hero's 5 year old son, who also despatches the odd ninja) tell you.

It also has the sort of dubbing so often mocked in pastiches of this kind of film.

Despite all that, it certainly has something, like an absurdly violent Saturday morning cartoon, with artistic pretensions to boot. Worth catching.

'71. Set in Northern Ireland; The tale of a young British soldier who gets separated from his patrol while supporting the arrest by the RUC of a Belfast local.
He then spends the night on foot on the run on the streets of Belfast . Absolutely gripping edge of the seat stuff! Well worth a watch.

Have you seen the full Lone Wolf and Cub series? I think there were 6 in total with Shogun Assassin being a sort of mash up of all of them.

No - although a friend of mine used to rave about them.

Continuing the martial arts theme, I watched "Red Cliff" on Sunday night.

John Woo's epic about a famous battle in Chinese history. A cast of thousands, a lot of whom are bludgeoned, stabbed, or shot full of arrows. Overlong, I thought, but spectacular.

Well worth checking out. Just as brutal and stylised as Shogun.

"Ran" - another Samurai epic from the master Kurosawa. Based fairly closely on King Lear. Whilst no one else can film battles and horsemen in a landscape quite like K, overall result not up there with his best - strangely I didn't much care for the characters or story that much, and perhaos went on a bit. In a good stage production of Lear you do care for the old King even if he's the architect of all his troubles. Glad I saw it, and at the pictures too, but maybe not the best film for someone new to Kurasawa - one for the enthusiast perhaps. I should say that his best films include Kagemusha, Youjimbo, Roshomon, Seven Samurai, Sanjuro - which are some of the finest movies ever made.

Saw that recently and agree absolutely. I particularly remember the bit where one of the locals is quizzing him about where he comes from and he says, if I remember rightly, Derby, and she says Oh I know someone from round that way...Nottingham, I think. And he says 'we hate Nottingham', and she asks him why. He looks momentarily baffled, as though this is the first time that question has ever occurred to him, before answering haltingly 'I don't know, really.' The Troubles in a nutshell, I thought. Blind, unreasoning tribalism.

" Lawrence of Arabia"
Absolutely fantastic, blue ray version via a projector, looked and sounded amazing.
It is the same version as the original cinema release, i was not expecting it to open with the overture playing over two minutes of blank screen. After he returns from Aqaba there is a shot of the top brass walking away and "INTERMISSION" blazes across the screen followed by another two minutes of overture/blank screen .......... i loved it !

One of my two favourite films. "No prisoners!....No prisoners!"

Steve Jobs.

Disappointing. I speak as a huge Danny Boyle fan. I have all his films. I even bought this one. Which was a mistake. Wooden actors in a dull set-up showing his life up to the i-Mac through the medium of Apple Key Notes. Yawn.

3/10

Danny went off the boil (sorry) some time ago for me. I've not really liked anything of his since Sunshine.

I'm not convinced this Trainspotting 'sequel' he's doing is a good idea. Though John Hodge has written it so there is hope!

Trance was good, especially when you take into account he was writing it to expunge all the kitsch and positivity from the Olympic opening ceremony. But yeh, Sunshine and before that The Beach (which was the film that first put me on to him).

Ah, I've not seen Trance, but have always meant to, I have heard good things. I think my favourite of his is probably Shallow Grave.
