Dredd - the (relatively) new one. Really rather good. Essentially an extended shoot out, but brings out the darkness of the Mega City and Dredd himself. As a fan of the comic strip, I have to say it brought it across well, albeit little comedy. Not for everyone, but a bleak dark film, true to its source, and having something to say. I'm in the minority in also liking the Stallone one, silly though it is and miles off the original comic.

Much better than I thought it would be. And the 3D version is stunning.

Way of the Gun - 7/10

I'd forgotten how entertaining this film is. Benicio del Toro and Ryan Phillippe play reckless idiots who decide to kidnap a woman (Juliette Lewis) who's being paid by a local gangster to have his child. It's a modern Western that goes pretty much how you'd expect...

Worth watching for the opening scene alone, which has nothing to do with the rest of the film but has some beautifully creative swearing.

And the movie world's slowest car chase. That scene is great.

It's crazy that Christopher McQuarrie hasn't directed more than this, Jack Reacher and the last Mission Impossible. I thought Jack Reacher was a very solid thriller.

From what I've read - he spends a lot of time 'consulting' (ie - fixing) on other people's knackered scripts, without receiving any credit but no doubt plenty of money. I also wonder if his association with Brian Singer might be why he doesn't want to be in the lime-light? I'm not suggesting anything sketchy about him, but you can imagine the field day the press would have.

Spent the last 3 nights watching 'The Hobbit', DVD per night, with SWMBO

I don't she's ever read the book, so it kept getting interrupted with questions all the way through

My viewing was similarly interrupted with questions of my own:

WTF is this elf/dwarf love triangle bollocks?

Why is Legolas in it?

Who taught the elves kung-fu?

Is a 40 minute scene devoted to setting a table really necessary?

Was it really necessary to shoot it in 48 fps? Because it looks odd.

I could go on...

Watched the first ten minutes of a trash movie called Bare Witness last night, on account of a pretty fair rating in TV Guide + a state of near narcolepsy in which a bit of mindless 'erotic thriller' sounded like an acceptable way of drifting through the next hour or so. Quite interesting, in a hideous sort of way. Soft porn, by any definition, but with pretensions to be 'a real fillum', it featured some of the worst acting I've ever seen - really poor actors doing their best to be Bruce Willis or Morgan Freeman. Even a few minutes brought the rare fascination of bringing it home to you just how good good actors are at what they do. They do it so well that it's easy to get the impression that 'anyone could do that - they're just doing what everyone does, and not forgetting their lines'. Well, as this piece of crap made painfully clear, it ain't necessarily so. 2/10. I'm feeling magnanimous.

I might let her see a 'vengeance' film tonight, & dig out 'The Punisher'

Wasn't the phrase 'based on' used???
Granted, I agree with you, there's a lot in there, that's not in the book

Wife did question whether the table-clearing song was for comedic value, I had to show her that it was actually in the book

The Running Man - 5/10

Arnie kicks ass in a dystopian future where criminals are given the option to become runners against a collection of stalkers in a televised death match. Very loosely based on a Steven King story.

I find this film frustrating to watch. The message is interesting, it's cleverly filmed in places and no scene feels unnecessary. However, it's badly let down by some ridiculous costumes (Dynamo in particular), a naff soundtrack and a laughably bad final showdown.

Richard Dawson is cracking as the host of the TV show, and that's probably the best realised bit of the film, given the actor and director. I reckon Aronofsky may have taken some inspiration for the game show scenes in Requiem for a Dream.

I know what you mean, but I think it's fair in the context of 80s Arnie films.

If I had to order them it would be something like this:

Predator (8)
Terminator (8)
Total Recall (7)
Conan The Barbarian (7)
Commando (6)
Running Man (5)
Red Heat (4)
Raw Deal (4)
Red Sonja (3)
Twins (3)
Conan the Destroyer (1)
