The Guard on Film4 with Brendan Gleeson, same Director as Calgary I mentioned earlier and some of the same cast, so the film has the same feel, same dark elements but not as dark, more humour and quirkiness. Strong cast with Gleeson, Mark Strong, Liam Cunningham etc.. Definitely one of my favourite films now, seen it twice, I imagine it's not for everyone but I recommend you try it and Calgary but the Guard first.

Over the last few days I've watched:

Taken - 4/10

I will never, never understand why this is so highly rated. It's entertaining enough but absolutely ludicrous. The flashback scene actually made me laugh: Yep, she was here Liam, you can't possibly have learned all the things you think you have though.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End - 3/10

I don't know why I gave this a go. For a series which started so playfully daft to go down the serious overwrought route doesn't make sense. Very poor.

The Prestige - 7/10

One of the few Nolan films I'd not seen. It's a pretty basic revenge story with a few twists and messages about sacrifice. The cast is superb and the script well written. Not my favourite of his but a very good film nonetheless

Inception - 6/10

Another Noalan film which was far easier to understand than the critics would have you believe, which spoils it a bit for me. I also find Ellen Paige supremely irritating and can never properly engage with any character she plays (I blame Juno for this, which is one of the most annoying films I've ever had the misfortune of enduring). It's visually very cool but there is very little substance when you look past that.

The second film in the series the Hobbit. Desolation of smaug. A long film, nearly 3 hours, but it was excellent. 8/10. Cant wait to watch the third and last film.

Save yourself 3 hours and don't bother. There's not enough actual story left to make a film out of. There never was really, hence all the bollocks about dwarf/elf love triangles. Tolkien would be raging if he could see what Jackson has done with The Hobbit.

Fun fact, you can read the book quicker than you can watch the films!

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.

I can't remember if there actually is in the last one to be honest, it should just never have been allowed to happen. It really hacks me off that they needed to chuck a love story in, particularly when it goes completely against everything that Tolkien created in his books.

A producer, writer or just anyone should have had a word with Jackson and pointed out that dwarves and elves hate each other for a variety of reasons.

I really liked it too. The plot was clever, and the fights were pretty good.

I saw The Theory of Everything. Tragic yet inspiring. I can't remember the last film that made me cry.

Lee Child's books are very readable and enjoyable, with the exception of the last one Personal. Tom Cruise doesn't fit the bill by playing Jack Reacher, but, as I said, I was pleasantly surprised.

Watch The Imitation Game if you get the chance. Not a 'crying' film, but sad and moving.

I finally watched the last part of Generation War last night.

A German with subtitles three parter that follows five people from the start until the end of WWII.

Quite gritty, so if you like your war films in the style of Von Ryan's Express this might not be for you.

7/10.

I agree with you to an extent...

Taken... agreed, it's sh!te, and so is Neeson.
All POTC films after The Curse of the Black Pearl are sh!te
The Prestige... great film for what it is, and Micheal Caine's character was right all along. Bowie is excellent as Tesla.
Inception, overrated pap. The 'twist' at the end is obvious from the start.

Ellen Page though, is wonderful, and Juno is wonderful, and i really must watch Hard Candy again.

Page is far too consciously cool for my liking which I think shows in her performances. I feel much the same about Juno - it wants to be cool and edgy but just comes across as try hard pish.

Hard Candy was an interesting watch, though it is pretty much just a take on Death and the Maiden which Polanski rather chillingly made a film of too.

Here's what I thought was wrong with Jack Reacher:

1/
The books are awful. Like Tom Clancy only more rubbish.

2/
Tom Cruise is a charisma vacuum. Reacher's something like six foot four and 250 pounds. Cruise is barely three feet tall and cries when the nice family wins on Family Fortunes.

3/
Rosamund Pike's teeth. Why did she have stupid fake teeth? And her part was insultingly patronising and under-written, all she did was look down at Cruise as he scurried around her ankles with a lobotomised expression.
