If I get wet, I get cold and miserable, it would have to dry and heat up instantaneously! ... oh and gore jackets do not fit me in the slightest! Forget the women's stuff, men's way too long on the arms and doesn't meet around the hips

I'm not mean (I have 4 climbing jackets that cost a whole lot more) but I also think that one day I'll come off my bike and if my jacket gets trashed (cost me £49.99 on a deal) I'll fret less than if I was wearing a jacket that cost way more.
Buy a Rapha jacket, they offer a free crash repair service.

Altura nighvision for me, a great jacket for those long fitness rides.
During the day i wear a northface triclimate which has zips under the arms. Keeps me warm on chilly days

Ive got the Altura night vision bought this year and its the best jacket I have for a commute . I wore it for a fast ride and had to take it off but to be fair that was my mistake for thinking I would need it and ended up in a summer cycling top and arm warmers .
I also have the trousers and panniers . Its good gear .

If i was starting out again .... The Altura would still be my first choice for winter/wet/night riding. Why pay more?
You say your a big guy - ok - buy in store or try the size before buying online, but don't start buying a size bigger, thinking the other layers will add lots of bulk - they won't, and the base layer is meant to fit nice and tight.

Go to a shop and look at the options and buy the one that feels best for you

Yesterday, I had a LS jersey as base layer on and the Night Vision and once, I got moving, I was plenty warm enough but not excessively so - it was around 6 deg and overcast with a light wind (I sound like the Met Office  )...It being yellow, I also like to think motorists could see me ;)

My Altura Night Vision has been good, even if the reflective bit on the left arm started to peel off a bit. It's not 100% breathable but i'm not a sweaty type and sometimes that bit of humidity is nice on a cold damp day. I bought the bright orange one,so far i haven't seen another one on the road.;)
