Chapeau !
What did the bicycle shop folks say when you came in naked to pick up your bicycle?
I don't think he was wearing a chapeau.

Anyhow, I'd let my body tell me how far to go. Some people complain about neck pain when they change over - it's usually just acclimatisation - but if it feels uncomfortable, keep it shortish and let the distance develop.

Pah! A few years ago I rode a 400km on a new bike that I picked up the day before. Naked.
Beats my first go on a cyclocross it was 99miles and I did it with my clothes on

Well did 8 mile loop and found I was stretching too much so did another 15 mile loop via the lbs in rawtenstall to flip the stem and then back via water and lumb. 2270 ft of climbing and found myself looking for a smaller gear, must be too used to my triple but I'm sure I will get used to the compact.

Gears will be higher on a road bike but because it is easier to pedal you won't need such low gears as a triple offers, you should soon get used to them.

Go on, tilt your head!
When I bought my first road bike I went out for a basic 20mile local circuit, the next ride was a 100km slog around the New Forest. I felt ready to quit after about 5 minutes, nothing felt right. I managed to man up and complete the ride. I did a few more 100km rides, then after failing a 200km attempt miserably (at 130km) I decided I needed a bike fit...nailed the next 200km attempt!
