Hi all, I picked up my new bike yesterday and was hoping I could get some advice re distance. I have been riding a diamondback contra flow hybrid for the last 15 months averaging about 25 miles. Like most people I have decided to go for a road bike to add to the collection. I will be going for my first ride on a road bike tomorrow and would appreciate any advice regarding distance to start with. Thanks

When I picked up my new Focus road bike I went out for a just a couple of miles to be sensible regarding position and set up - but that few miles turned into 30 so just go out and enjoy, maybe have someone on standby if you run into problems.

Hi,

Just do a loop you know well first off, and get used to the bike with several rides
before really trying to set it up to suit you, my two bikes have very different
setups, and being very different my road bike is a mile monster over
the folder but I still had to initially get used to it, and the best set up.

rgds, sreten.

Conversely the folder is better training over shorter distances
than the road bike, and you need to spin with the wind behind.

As I got used to the road bike I tuned in on what suited riding
it, rather than the differences to riding the bike I was used to.

My first ride for 20 years last week was 57 miles on a new bike, I wouldn't recommend it though as my legs were knackered!

The first 25 miles were pretty easy so if you do those sort of distances regularly you should be able to knock off 40+ without any trouble.

Thanks for all the replies, I will keep you all posted as I said my main concern was getting used to the new position and the gears on the brake levers but really looking forward to practicing

Might want to check the weather forecast and take a brolley ( and a windbreak). Is the saddle off an old bike or new. That may well be the issue if not used to it
